1 And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.
1 And so, crying out, the entire crowd wept throughout that night.
1 THEN all the congregation was in commotion, and lifted up their voices and cried; and the people wept that night.
2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron; and the whole congregation said unto them: 'Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would we had died in this wilderness!
2 And all the sons of Israel were murmuring against Moses and Aaron, saying
3 And wherefore doth YHWH bring us unto this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be a prey; were it not better for us to return into Egypt?'
3 Would we had died in the land of Egypt! or in this wilderness, would we had died! and why does the Lord bring us into this land to fall in war? our wives and our children shall be for a prey: now then it is better to return into Egypt.
4 And they said one to another: 'Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.'
5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
5 And Moses and Aaron fell upon their face before all the congregation of the children of Israel.
5 And when Moses and Aaron heard this, they fell prone on the ground in the sight of the multitude of the sons of Israel.
6 And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of them that spied out the land, rent their clothes.
6 Yet truly, Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who themselves had also viewed the land, tore their garments,
7 And they spoke unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: 'The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceeding good land.
7 and spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, The land which we surveyed is indeed extremely good.
7 and they said to the entire multitude of the sons of Israel: “The land that we circled through is very good.
8 If YHWH delight in us, then He will bring us into this land, and give it unto us--a land which floweth with milk and honey.
8 If the Lord choose us, he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which flows with milk and honey.
9 Only rebel not against YHWH, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us; their defence is removed from over them, and the YHWH is with us; fear them not.'
9 Do not choose to be rebellious against the Lord. And do not fear the people of this land, for, like bread, so are we able to devour them. All protection has withdrawn from them. The Lord is with us. Do not be afraid.”
10 But all the congregation bade stone them with stones, when the glory of YHWH appeared in the tent of meeting unto all the children of Israel.
10 And all the congregation bade stone them with stones; and the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud on the tabernacle of witness to all the children of Israel.
10 And when the entire multitude cried out, and they wanted to crush them with stones, the glory of the Lord appeared, over the roof of the covenant, to all the sons of Israel.
11 And YHWH said unto Moses: 'How long will this people despise Me? and how long will they not believe in Me, for all the signs which I have wrought among them?
11 And the Lord said to Moses, How long does this people provoke me? and how long do they refuse to believe me for all the signs which I have wrought among them?
12 I will smite them with the pestilence, and destroy them, and will make of thee a nation greater and mightier than they.'
12 Therefore, I will strike them with a pestilence, and so I will consume them. But you I will make the ruler over a great nation, and one which is mightier than this one.”
13 And Moses said unto YHWH: 'When the Egyptians shall hear--for Thou broughtest up this people in Thy might from among them--
13 And Moses said to the Lord: “But then the Egyptians, from whose midst you led out this people,
14 they will say to the inhabitants of this land, who have heard that Thou YHWH art in the midst of this people; inasmuch as Thou LORD art seen face to face, and Thy cloud standeth over them, and Thou goest before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night;
15 now if Thou shalt kill this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of Thee will speak, saying
15 And if thou shalt destroy this nation as one man; then all the nations that have heard thy name shall speak, saying,
15 may hear that you have killed so great a multitude, as if they were one man, and they may say
16 Because YHWH was not able to bring this people into the land which He swore unto them, therefore He hath slain them in the wilderness.
16 ‘He was not able to lead the people into the land about which he had sworn. Therefore, he slew them in the wilderness.’
17 And now, I pray Thee, let the power of YHWH be great, according as Thou hast spoken, saying
17 And now, O Lord, let thy strength be exalted, as thou spakest, saying,
17 Therefore, may the strength of the Lord be magnified, just as you swore, saying
18 YHWH is slow to anger, and plenteous in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation.
18 The Lord is long-suffering and merciful, and true, removing transgressions and iniquities and sins, and he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the sins of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation.
18 ‘The Lord is patient and full of mercy, taking away iniquity and wickedness, and forsaking no one who is harmless. He visits the sins of the fathers upon the sons, to the third and fourth generation.’
19 Pardon, I pray Thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of Thy lovingkindness, and according as Thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.'
19 Forgive this people their sin according to thy great mercy, as thou wast favourable to them from Egypt until now.
19 Forgive, I beg you, the sins of this people, according to the greatness of your mercy, just as you have been gracious to them in their journey from Egypt to this place.”
20 And YHWH said: 'I have pardoned according to thy word.
20 And the Lord said to Moses, I am gracious to them according to thy word.
21 But in very deed, as I live--and all the earth shall be filled with the glory of YHWH--
21 But as I live and my name is living, so the glory of the Lord shall fill all the earth.
21 Also, as I live, the entire world shall be filled with the glory of the Lord.
22 surely all those men that have seen My glory, and My signs, which I wrought in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have put Me to proof these ten times, and have not hearkened to My voice;
22 For all the men who see my glory, and the signs which I wrought in Egypt, and in the wilderness, and have tempted me this tenth time, and have not hearkened to my voice,
22 And yet, all the men who have seen my majesty, and the signs that I have wrought in Egypt and in the wilderness, and who have tested me ten times already, and yet have not obeyed my voice,
23 surely they shall not see the land which I swore unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that despised Me see it.
23 surely they shall not see the land, which I sware to their fathers; but their children which are with me here, as many as know not good or evil, every inexperienced youth, to them will I give the land; but none who have provoked me shall see it.
24 But My servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed Me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.
24 My servant Caleb, who, being full of another spirit, has followed me, I will lead into this land, through which he has wandered, and his offspring shall possess it.
25 Now the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the Vale; tomorrow turn ye, and get you into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.'
25 But Amalec and the Chananite dwell in the valley: to-morrow turn and depart for the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea.
25 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites live in the valleys. Tomorrow, move the camp and return into the wilderness, by the way of the Red Sea.”
26 And YHWH spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying
26 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,
27 'How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, that keep murmuring against Me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they keep murmuring against Me.
27 “How long will this very wicked multitude murmur against me? I have heard the complaints of the sons of Israel.
28 Say unto them: As I live, saith YHWH, surely as ye have spoken in Mine ears, so will I do to you
28 Say to them, As I live, saith the Lord: surely as ye spoke into my ears, so will I do to you.
29 your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness, and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, ye that have murmured against Me;
29 In the wilderness, here shall your carcasses lie. All you who were numbered from twenty years and above, and who have murmured against me,
30 surely ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I lifted up My hand that I would make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
30 ye shall not enter into the land for which I stretched out my hand to establish you upon it; except only Chaleb the son of Jephonne, and Joshua the son of Naue.
31 But your little ones, that ye said would be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have rejected.
31 But your little ones, about whom you said that they would be a prey to the enemies, I will lead them in, so that they may see the land that has displeased you.
31 But your little ones, who you said would become the prey, and your sons who today do not know good and evil, they shall enter into the land, and I will bring them there, and they shall know the land which you have despised.
32 But as for you, your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness.
32 And your carcases shall fall in this wilderness.
32 Your carcasses shall lie in the wilderness.
33 And your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your strayings, until your carcasses be consumed in the wilderness.
33 Your sons shall wander in the desert for forty years, and they shall bear your fornication, until the carcasses of their fathers are consumed in the desert.
33 And your sons shall be shepherds forty years in this wilderness, and shall suffer for your whoredom until your corpses are consumed in this wilderness.
34 After the number of the days in which ye spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know My displeasure.
34 According to the number of the days during which ye spied the land, forty days, a day for a year, ye shall bear your sins forty years, and ye shall know my fierce anger.
35 I YHWH have spoken, surely this will I do unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against Me; in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.'
35 For just as I have spoken, so shall I do, to this entire most wicked multitude, which has risen up together against me. In the wilderness, here shall it fade away and die.”
36 And the men, whom Moses sent to spy out the land, and who, when they returned, made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up an evil report against the land,
36 And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, and who came and murmured against it to the assembly so as to bring out evil words concerning the land, —
36 Therefore, all the men, whom Moses had sent to contemplate the land, and who, having returned, had caused the entire multitude to murmur against him, disparaging the land as if it were evil,
37 even those men that did bring up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before YHWH.
37 the men that spoke evil reports against the land, even died of the plague before the Lord.
37 suffered death and were struck down in the sight of the Lord.
38 But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, remained alive of those men that went to spy out the land.
38 But only Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive, out of all those who had journeyed to examine the land.
39 And Moses told these words unto all the children of Israel; and the people mourned greatly.
40 And they rose up early in the morning, and got them up to the top of the mountain, saying: 'Lo, we are here, and will go up unto the place which YHWH hath promised; for we have sinned.'
40 And behold, rising up at first light, they climbed to the top of the mountain, and they said, “We are prepared to ascend to the place, about which the Lord has spoken, for we have sinned.”
40 And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here , and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have sinned. And the LORD God saying to Moses: speak to them that not you shall ascend and not you shall battle, as there is no me within you and you will be defeated before faces of your enemies.
41 And Moses said: 'Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of YHWH, seeing it shall not prosper?
41 And Moses said, Why do ye transgress the word of the Lord? ye shall not prosper.
41 And Moses said to them: “Why do you transgress the word of the Lord, merely because it will not result in prosperity for you?
42 Go not up, for YHWH is not among you; that ye be not smitten down before your enemies.
42 Do not ascend, for the Lord is not with you, lest you be overthrown before your enemies.
43 For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and ye shall fall by the sword; forasmuch as ye are turned back from following YHWH, and the YHWH will not be with you.'
43 The Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, by whose sword you shall be ruined, for you were not willing to consent to the Lord, and so the Lord is not with you.”
44 But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain; nevertheless the ark of the covenant of YHWH, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.
45 Then the Amalekite and the Canaanite, who dwelt in that hill-country, came down, and smote them and beat them down, even unto Hormah.
45 Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, to meet them. And they are chasing them according to the words. And smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah. And they are returning to the camp
15:1 And YHWH spoke unto Moses, saying
1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
15:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When ye are come into the land of your habitations, which I give unto you,
2 “Speak to the sons of Israel, and you shall say to them: When you will have entered into the land of your habitation, which I will give you,
15:3 and will make an offering by fire unto YHWH, a burnt-offering, or a sacrifice, in fulfilment of a vow clearly uttered, or as a freewill-offering, or in your appointed seasons, to make a sweet savour unto the YHWH, of the herd, or of the flock;
3 and thou wilt offer whole-burnt-offerings to the Lord, a whole-burnt-offering or a meat-offering to perform a vow, or a free-will offering, or to offer in your feasts a sacrifice of sweet savour to the Lord, whether of the herd or the flock
15:4 then shall he that bringeth his offering present unto YHWH a meal-offering of a tenth part of an ephah of fine flour mingled with the fourth part of a hin of oil;
4 whoever immolates the victim shall offer a sacrifice of fine wheat flour, the tenth part of an ephah, sprinkled with oil, which shall have the measure of the fourth part of a hin,
15:5 and wine for the drink-offering, the fourth part of a hin, shalt thou prepare with the burnt-offering or for the sacrifice, for each lamb.
5 And for a drink-offering ye shall offer the fourth part of a hin on the whole-burnt-offering, or on the meat-offering: for every lamb thou shalt offer so much, as a sacrifice, a smell of sweet savour to the Lord.
5 and he shall give the same measure of wine, poured out as libations, whether as a holocaust or as a victim.
15:6 Or for a ram, thou shalt prepare for a meal-offering two tenth parts of an ephah of fine flour mingled with the third part of a hin of oil;
6 And for a ram, when ye offer it as a whole-burnt-offering or as a sacrifice, thou shalt prepare as a meat-offering two tenths of fine flour mingled with oil, the third part of a hin.
6 With each lamb and each ram, there shall be a sacrifice of fine wheat flour, of two tenths, which shall be sprinkled with one third part of a hin of oil.
15:7 and for the drink-offering thou shalt present the third part of a hin of wine, of a sweet savour unto YHWH.
7 And ye shall offer for a smell of sweet savour to the Lord wine for a drink-offering, the third part of a hin.
15:8 And when thou preparest a bullock for a burnt-offering, or for a sacrifice, in fulfilment of a vow clearly uttered, or for peace- offerings unto YHWH;
8 Yet truly, when you will offer, from the oxen, a holocaust or a victim, in order to fulfill your vow or for peace-offering victims,
15:9 then shall there be presented with the bullock a meal-offering of three tenth parts of an ephah of fine flour mingled with half a hin of oil.
9 you shall give, for each ox, three tenths of fine wheat flour, sprinkled with oil, which has the measure of one half of one hin,
15:10 And thou shalt present for the drink-offering half a hin of wine, for an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto YHWH.
10 And wine for a drink-offering the half of a hin, a sacrifice for a smell of sweet savour to the Lord.
10 and the wine, poured out as libations, shall be of the same measure, as an oblation of most sweet odor to the Lord.
15:11 Thus shall it be done for each bullock, or for each ram, or for each of the he-lambs, or of the kids.
11 Thus shalt thou do to one calf or to one ram, or to one lamb of the sheep or kid of the goats.
11 So shall you do
15:12 According to the number that ye may prepare, so shall ye do for every one according to their number.
12 for each ox, and ram, and lamb, and young goat.
15:13 All that are home-born shall do these things after this manner, in presenting an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto YHWH.
13 Every native of the country shall do thus to offer such things as sacrifices for a smell of sweet savour to the Lord.
13 Both natives and sojourners
15:14 And if a stranger sojourn with you, or whosoever may be among you, throughout your generations, and will offer an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto YHWH; as ye do, so he shall do.
14 And if there should be a stranger among you in your land, or one who should be born to you among your generations, and he will offer a sacrifice, a smell of sweet savour to the Lord—as ye do, so the whole congregation shall offer to the Lord.
14 shall offer sacrifices by the same rituals.
15:15 As for the congregation, there shall be one statute both for you, and for the stranger that sojourneth with you, a statute for ever throughout your generations; as ye are, so shall the stranger be before YHWH.
15 There shall be one law for you and for the strangers abiding among you, a perpetual law for your generations: as ye are, so shall the stranger be before the Lord.
15 There shall be one precept and one judgment, as much for yourselves as for newcomers to the land.”
15:16 One law and one ordinance shall be both for you, and for the stranger that sojourneth with you.
16 There shall be one law and one ordinance for you, and for the stranger that abides among you.
16 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying
15:17 And YHWH spoke unto Moses, saying
17 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
17 “Speak to the sons of Israel, and you shall say to them
15:18 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When ye come into the land whither I bring you,
18 Speak to the sons of Israel, and thou shalt say to them, When ye are entering into the land, into which I bring you,
18 When you will arrive in the land which I will give to you,
15:19 then it shall be, that, when ye eat of the bread of the land, ye shall set apart a portion for a gift unto YHWH.
19 then it shall come to pass, when ye shall eat of the bread of the land, ye shall separate a wave-offering, a special offering to the Lord, the first-fruits of your dough.
19 and when you will eat from the bread of that region, you shall separate the first-fruits to the Lord
15:20 Of the first of your dough ye shall set apart a cake for a gift; as that which is set apart of the threshing-floor, so shall ye set it apart.
20 Ye shall offer your bread a heave-offering: as a heave-offering from the threshing-floor, so shall ye separate it,
20 from the foods that you eat. Just as you separate the first-fruits of your threshing floors,
15:21 Of the first of your dough ye shall give unto YHWH a portion for a gift throughout your generations.
21 even the first-fruits of your dough, and ye shall give the Lord a heave-offering throughout your generations.
21 so also shall you give the first-fruits of your cooked grains to the Lord.
15:22 And when ye shall err, and not observe all these commandments, which YHWH hath spoken unto Moses,
22 But whensoever ye shall transgress, and not perform all these commands, which the Lord spoke to Moses;
22 And if, through ignorance, you neglect any of these things, which the Lord has spoken to Moses,
15:23 even all that YHWH hath commanded you by the hand of Moses, from the day that the YHWH gave commandment, and onward throughout your generations;
23 as the Lord appointed you by the hand of Moses, from the day which the Lord appointed you and forward throughout your generations,
23 and which he has commanded through him for you, from the day that he began to command and thereafter,
15:24 then it shall be, if it be done in error by the congregation, it being hid from their eyes, that all the congregation shall offer one young bullock for a burnt-offering, for a sweet savour unto YHWH--with the meal-offering thereof, and the drink-offering thereof, according to the ordinance--and one he-goat for a sin-offering.
24 then it shall come to pass, if a trespass be committed unwillingly, unknown to the congregation, then shall all the congregation offer a calf of the herd without blemish for a whole-burnt-offering of sweet savour to the Lord, and its meat-offering and its drink-offering according to the ordinance, and one kid of the goats for a sin-offering.
24 and if the multitude will have forgotten to do it, then they shall offer a calf from the herd, a holocaust as a most sweet odor to the Lord, and its sacrifice and libations, just as the ceremonies ask, and a he-goat for sin.
15:25 And the priest shall make atonement for all the congregation of the children of Israel, and they shall be forgiven; for it was an error, and they have brought their offering, an offering made by fire unto YHWH, and their sin-offering before the YHWH, for their error.
25 And the priest shall pray for the entire multitude of the sons of Israel, and it shall be forgiven them, because they did not sin willfully. Nevertheless, they shall offer incense to the Lord for themselves, and for sin, as well as for their error.
15:26 And all the congregation of the children of Israel shall be forgiven, and the stranger that sojourneth among them; for in respect of all the people it was done in error.
26 And it shall be forgiven as respects all the congregation of the children of Israel, and the stranger that is abiding among you, because it is involuntary to all the people.
26 And it shall be forgiven all the people of the sons of Israel, as well as the newcomers who sojourn among them, for it is the culpability of all the people through neglect.
15:27 And if one person sin through error, then he shall offer a she-goat of the first year for a sin-offering.
27 And if one soul sin unwillingly, he shall bring one she-goat of a year old for a sin-offering.
27 But if one soul will have sinned by not knowing, he shall offer a one-year-old she-goat for his sin.
15:28 And the priest shall make atonement for the soul that erreth, when he sinneth through error, before YHWH, to make atonement for him; and he shall be forgiven,
28 And the priest shall pray for him, because he sinned unknowingly before the Lord. And he shall obtain pardon for him, and it will be forgiven him.
15:29 both he that is home-born among the children of Israel, and the stranger that sojourneth among them: ye shall have one law for him that doeth aught in error.
29 One law shall be for all who sin by ignorance, as much for natives as for newcomers.
29 You shall have one law for him who does anything through ignorance, both for the children of Israel and for the proselytes who sojourn among you.
15:30 But the soul that doeth aught with a high hand, whether he be home-born or a stranger, the same blasphemeth YHWH; and that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
15:31 Because he hath despised the word of YHWH, and hath broken His commandment; that soul shall utterly be cut off, his iniquity shall be upon him.
31 for he has set at nought the word of the Lord and broken his commands: that soul shall be utterly destroyed, his sin is upon him.
31 For he has despised the word of the Lord, and he has nullified his precept. For this reason, he shall be destroyed, and he shall bear his iniquity.”
15:32 And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks upon the sabbath day.
32 And it happened that, when the sons of Israel were in the wilderness, and they had found a man collecting wood on the day of the Sabbath,
15:33 And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation.
33 And they who found him gathering sticks on the sabbath-day brought him to Moses and Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel.
33 they brought him to Moses and Aaron, and to the whole multitude.
15:34 And they put him in ward, because it had not been declared what should be done to him.
34 And they placed him in custody, for they did not determine what they should do to him.
34 And they enclosed him in a prison, not knowing what they should do with him.
15:35 And YHWH said unto Moses: 'The man shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp.'
35 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Let the man be by all means put to death: do ye all the congregation, stone him with stones.
35 And the Lord said to Moses, “Let that man be put to death; let the entire crowd crush him with stones, outside the camp.”
15:36 And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died, as YHWH commanded Moses.
36 And when they had led him out, they overwhelmed him with stones, and he died, just as the Lord had instructed.
15:37 And YHWH spoke unto Moses, saying
37 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
37 The Lord also said to Moses
15:38 'Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them throughout their generations fringes in the corners of their garments, and that they put with the fringe of each corner a thread of blue.
38 Speak to the children of Israel, and thou shalt tell them; and let them make for themselves fringes upon the borders of their garments throughout their generations: and ye shall put upon the fringes of the borders a lace of blue.
38 “Speak to the sons of Israel, and you shall tell them to make for themselves hems at the corners of their cloaks, placing in them ribbons of hyacinth,
15:39 And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of YHWH, and do them; and that ye go not about after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go astray;
39 And it shall be on your fringes, and ye shall look on them, and ye shall remember all the commands of the Lord, and do them: and ye shall not turn back after your imaginations, and after the sight of your eyes in the things after which ye go a whoring;
39 so that, when they see these, they may remember all the commandments of the Lord, and they may not follow their own thoughts and eyes, fornicating in various ways,
15:40 that ye may remember and do all My commandments, and be holy unto your God.
40 but instead, they, being more mindful of the precepts of the Lord, may do them and may be holy to their God.
15:41 I am YHWH your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the YHWH your God.'
41 I am the Lord your God that brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the Lord your God.
16:1 Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men;
1 And Core the son of Isaar the son of Caath the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiron, sons of Eliab, and Aun the son of Phaleth the son of Ruben, spoke;
1 Then, behold, Korah the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and also On the son of Peleth, of the sons of Ruben,
16:2 and they rose up in face of Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty men; they were princes of the congregation, the elect men of the assembly, men of renown;
2 and rose up before Moses, and two hundred and fifty men of the sons of Israel, chiefs of the assembly, chosen councillors, and men of renown.
2 rose up against Moses, with two hundred fifty others of the sons of Israel, leading men of the assembly, and who, at the time of a council, would be called by name.
16:3 and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them: 'Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and YHWH is among them; wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the assembly of the YHWH?'
3 They rose up against Moses and Aaron, and said, Let it be enough for you that all the congregation are holy, and the Lord is among them; and why do ye set up yourselves against the congregation of the Lord?
3 And when they had stood against Moses and Aaron, they said: “Let it be sufficient for you that the entire multitude is of holy ones, and that the Lord is among them. Why do you elevate yourselves above the people of the Lord?”
16:4 And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face.
4 When Moses had heard this, he fell prone on his face.
16:5 And he spoke unto Korah and unto all his company, saying: 'In the morning YHWH will show who are His, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near unto Him; even him whom He may choose will He cause to come near unto Him.
5 And he spoke to Core and all his assembly, saying, God has visited and known those that are his and who are holy, and has brought them to himself; and whom he has chosen for himself, he has brought to himself.
5 And speaking to Korah, and to the entire multitude, he said: “In the morning, the Lord will cause it to be known who belongs to him, and which holy ones he will join to himself. And whomever he will choose, they shall be close to him.
16:6 This do: take you censors, Korah, and all his company;
6 This do ye: take to yourselves censers, Core and all his company;
6 Therefore, do this: Each one of you, Korah and all your associates, take your censer,
16:7 and put fire therein, and put incense upon them before YHWH to-morrow; and it shall be that the man whom the YHWH doth choose, he shall be holy; ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi.'
7 and drawing fire into it tomorrow, place incense upon it before the Lord. And whomever he will choose, the same shall be holy. You sons of Levi have been raised up greatly.”
7 And put fire into them, and put incense into them before the LORD tomorrow; and it shall be that the man whom the LORD chooses, he shall be holy; this is enough for you, O you sons of Levi.
16:8 And Moses said unto Korah: 'Hear now, ye sons of Levi
8 And he said again to Korah: “Listen, sons of Levi.
16:9 is it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to Himself, to do the service of the tabernacle of YHWH, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them;
9 Is it a small thing to you, that the God of Israel has separated you from all the people, and has joined you to himself, so that you would serve him in the rituals of the tabernacle, and stand before gatherings of the people, and minister to him?
16:10 and that He hath brought thee near, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee? and will ye seek the priesthood also?
10 Was the reason that he caused you and all your brothers, the sons of Levi, to approach him, so that you would even claim for yourselves the priesthood too,
10 And he has brought you near to him, and all your brethren the sons of Levi with you; and do you seek the priesthood also?
16:11 Therefore thou and all thy company that are gathered together against YHWH--; and as to Aaron, what is he that ye murmur against him?'
11 and so that your entire group would stand against the Lord? For what is Aaron that you should murmur against him?”
16:12 And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; and they said: 'We will not come up;
12 Therefore, Moses sent to call for Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, who responded: “We will not come.
16:13 is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, but thou must needs make thyself also a prince over us?
13 Is it a little thing that thou hast brought us up to a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, and that thou altogether rulest over us?
13 Is it a small matter to you, that you have led us away from a land that was flowing with milk and honey, so as to kill us in the desert, unless you could also be a ruler over us?
16:14 Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards; wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up.'
14 Thou art a prince, and hast thou brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, and hast thou given us an inheritance of land and vineyards? wouldest thou have put out the eyes of those men? we will not go up.
14 You have led us, it is true, to a land that flows with streams of milk and honey, and you have given us possession of fields and vineyards. But will you also tear out our eyes? We will not come.”
16:15 And Moses was very wroth, and said unto YHWH: 'Respect not Thou their offering; I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them.'
15 And Moses was exceeding indignant, and said to the Lord, Do thou take no heed to their sacrifice: I have not taken away the desire of any one of them, neither have I hurt any one of them.
15 And Moses, being very angry, said to the Lord: “Do not look with favor on their sacrifices. You know that I have not accepted from them, at any time, so much as a young donkey, nor have I afflicted any of them.”
16:16 And Moses said unto Korah: 'Be thou and all thy congregation before YHWH, thou, and they, and Aaron, to-morrow;
16 And Moses said to Core, Sanctify thy company, and be ready before the Lord, thou and Aaron and they, to-morrow.
16 And he said to Korah: “You and your congregation, stand alone before the Lord, and apart from Aaron, tomorrow.
16:17 and take ye every man his fire-pan, and put incense upon them, and bring ye before YHWH every man his fire-pan, two hundred and fifty fire-pans; thou also, and Aaron, each his fire-pan.'
17 And take each man his censer, and ye shall put incense upon them, and shall bring each one his censer before the Lord, two hundred and fifty censers, and thou and Aaron shall bring each his censer.
17 Let each one of you take censers, and place incense in them, offering to the Lord two hundred fifty censers. Let Aaron also hold his censer.”
16:18 And they took every man his fire-pan, and put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood at the door of the tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron.
18 When they had done this, Moses and Aaron stood up,
16:19 And Korah assembled all the congregation against them unto the door of the tent of meeting; and the glory of YHWH appeared unto all the congregation.
19 And Core raised up against them all his company by the door of the tabernacle of witness; and the glory of the Lord appeared to all the congregation.
19 and, having crowded the entire multitude close to them at the door of the tabernacle, the glory of the Lord appeared to them all.
16:20 And YHWH spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying
20 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,
16:21 'Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.'
21 Separate your selves from the midst of this congregation, and I will consume them at once.
21 “Separate yourselves from the midst of this congregation, so that I may suddenly destroy them.”
16:22 And they fell upon their faces, and said: 'O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt Thou be wroth with all the congregation?'
22 But they fell prone on their faces, and they said, “O most strong One, the God of the spirits of all flesh, should your anger rage against all, for the sin of one?”
16:23 And YHWH spoke unto Moses, saying
23 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
16:24 'Speak unto the congregation, saying: Get you up from about the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.'
24 Speak to the congregation, saying, Depart from the company of Core round about.
24 “Instruct the entire people to separate from the tents of Korah, and Dathan, and Abiram.”
16:25 And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.
16:26 And he spoke unto the congregation, saying: 'Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be swept away in all their sins.'
26 And he spoke to the congregation, saying, Separate yourselves from the tents of these stubborn men, and touch nothing that belongs to them, lest ye be consumed with them in all their sin.
26 and he said to the crowd, “Withdraw from the tabernacles of these impious men, and touch nothing which pertains to them, lest you become involved in their sins.”
16:27 So they got them up from the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side; and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents, with their wives, and their sons, and their little ones.
27 And they stood aloof from the tent of Core round about; and Dathan and Abiron went forth and stood by the doors of their tents, and their wives and their children and their store.
27 And when they had withdrawn from their tents all around, Dathan and Abiram came out and stood at the entrance of their pavilions, with their wives and children, and with all their associates.
16:28 And Moses said: 'Hereby ye shall know that YHWH hath sent me to do all these works, and that I have not done them of mine own mind.
28 And Moses said: “By this shall you know that the Lord has sent me to do all that you discern, and that I have not brought these things out of my own heart
16:29 If these men die the common death of all men, and be visited after the visitation of all men, then YHWH hath not sent Me.
29 If these men shall die according to the death of all men, if also their visitation shall be according to the visitation of all men, then the Lord has not sent me.
29 If these men pass away by the common death of men, or if they will be visited by a scourge, of a kind by which others are often visited, then the Lord did not send me.
16:30 But if YHWH make a new thing, and the ground open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down alive into the pit, then ye shall understand that these men have despised the YHWH.'
30 But if the Lord shall shew by a wonder, and the earth shall open her mouth and swallow them up, and their houses, and their tents, and all that belongs to them, and they shall go down alive into Hades, then ye shall know that these men have provoked the Lord.
30 But if the LORD make a new thing, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them up with all things that belong to them, and they go down alive with all that belongs to them into Sheol, then you shall know that these men have provoked the LORD.
16:31 And it came to pass, as he made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground did cleave asunder that was under them.
31 And when he ceased speaking all these words, the ground clave asunder beneath them.
31 Therefore, as soon as he had ceased to speak, the earth broke open under their feet.
16:32 And the earth opened her mouth and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods.
32 And the ground opened, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and all the men that were with Core, and their cattle.
32 And opening its mouth, it devoured them with their tabernacles and their entire substance.
16:33 So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit; and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the assembly.
33 And they went down and all that they had, alive into Hades; and the ground covered them, and they perished from the midst of the congregation.
16:34 And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them; for they said: 'Lest the earth swallow us up.'
34 Yet truly, all of Israel, which was standing all around, took flight at the clamor of those who were perishing, saying, “Lest perhaps the earth may swallow us whole also.”
16:35 And fire came forth from YHWH, and devoured the two hundred and fifty men that offered the incense.
35 Then, too, a fire, going forth from the Lord, put to death the two hundred fifty men who were offering the incense.
35 And there came out a fire from before the LORD and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.
16:36 And YHWH spoke unto Moses, saying
36 And the Lord said to Moses,
16:37 'Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the fire-pans out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they are become holy;
37 and to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, Take up the brazen censers out of the midst of the men that have been burnt, and scatter the strange fire yonder, for they have sanctified the censers
37 “Instruct Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, to take up the censers which lie in the burning, and to scatter the fire to one side and another, because they were sanctified
16:38 even the fire-pans of these men who have sinned at the cost of their lives, and let them be made beaten plates for a covering of the altar--for they are become holy, because they were offered before YHWH--that they may be a sign unto the children of Israel.'
38 in the deaths of these sinners. And let him form them into plates, and affix them to the altar, because incense had been offered in them to the Lord, and they were sanctified, and so that the sons of Israel may discern in them a sign and a memorial.”
16:39 And Eleazar the priest took the brazen fire-pans, which they that were burnt had offered; and they beat them out for a covering of the altar,
39 Therefore, Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers, by which those whom the burning devoured had made an offering, and he formed them into plates, affixing them to the altar,
16:40 to be a memorial unto the children of Israel, to the end that no common man, that is not of the seed of Aaron, draw near to burn incense before YHWH; that he fare not as Korah, and as his company; as the YHWH spoke unto him by the hand of Moses.
40 so that the sons of Israel would have, thereafter, something to admonish them, lest any stranger, or anyone who is not of the offspring of Aaron, might approach to offer incense to the Lord, and lest he endure what happened to Korah, and to all his congregation, when the Lord spoke to Moses.
16:41 But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying: 'Ye have killed the people of YHWH.'
41 And the children of Israel murmured the next day against Moses and Aaron, saying, Ye have killed the people of the Lord.
41 Then, the following day, the entire multitude of the sons of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron, saying: “You have put to death the people of the Lord.”
16:42 And it came to pass, when the congregation was assembled against Moses and against Aaron, that they looked toward the tent of meeting; and, behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of YHWH appeared.
42 And when there arose a sedition, and the tumult increased,
16:43 And Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of meeting.
43 Moses and Aaron fled to the tabernacle of the covenant. But after they had entered it, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the Lord appeared.
16:44 And YHWH spoke unto Moses, saying
44 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,
16:45 'Get you up from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.' And they fell upon their faces.
45 Depart out of the midst of this congregation, and I will consume them at once: and they fell upon their faces.
45 “Withdraw from the midst of this multitude, and I will destroy them immediately.” And while they were lying on the ground,
16:46 And Moses said unto Aaron: 'Take thy fire-pan, and put fire therein from off the altar, and lay incense thereon, and carry it quickly unto the congregation, and make atonement for them; for there is wrath gone out from YHWH: the plague is begun.'
46 And Moses said to Aaron, Take a censer, and put on it fire from the altar, and put incense on it, and carry it away quickly into the camp, and make atonement for them; for wrath is gone forth from the presence of the Lord, it has begun to destroy the people.
16:47 And Aaron took as Moses spoke, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and, behold, the plague was begun among the people; and he put on the incense, and made atonement for the people.
47 When Aaron had done this, and he ran into the midst of the multitude, which the burning fire was now destroying, and he offered the incense.
16:48 And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed.
48 And standing between the dead and the living, he prayed for the people, and the scourge ceased.
16:49 Now they that died by the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, besides them that died about the matter of Korah.
49 And they that died in the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, besides those that died on account of Core.
49 But the number of those who were struck down was fourteen thousand men, and seven hundred, aside from those who had perished in the sedition of Korah.
16:50 And Aaron returned unto Moses unto the door of the tent of meeting, and the plague was stayed.
17:1 And YHWH spoke unto Moses, saying
1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
17:2 'Speak unto the children of Israel, and take of them rods, one for each fathers' house, of all their princes according to their fathers' houses, twelve rods; thou shalt write every man's name upon his rod.
17:3 And thou shalt write Aaron's name upon the rod of Levi, for there shall be one rod for the head of their fathers' houses.
3 And write the name of Aaron on the rod of Levi; for it is one rod for each: they shall give them according to the tribe of the house of their families.
3 But the name of Aaron shall be for the tribe of Levi, and one rod separately shall contain all their families.
17:4 And thou shalt lay them up in the tent of meeting before the testimony, where I meet with you.
4 And you shall place these in the tabernacle of the covenant before the testimony, where I will speak to you.
17:5 And it shall come to pass, that the man whom I shall choose, his rod shall bud; and I will make to cease from Me the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against you.'
5 Whomever of these I will choose, his rod will germinate, and so shall I restrain the complaints of the sons of Israel before me, by which they murmur against you.”
17:6 And Moses spoke unto the children of Israel; and all their princes gave him rods, for each prince one, according to their fathers' houses, even twelve rods; and the rod of Aaron was among their rods.
6 And Moses spoke to the sons of Israel. And all the leaders gave him rods, one for each tribe. And there were twelve rods, aside from the rod of Aaron.
17:7 And Moses laid up the rods before YHWH in the tent of the testimony.
7 And when Moses had placed these before the Lord, in the tabernacle of the testimony,
17:8 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses went into the tent of the testimony; and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and put forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and bore ripe almonds.
8 returning on the following day, he found that the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi, had germinated, and that the swelling buds had opened into flowers, which, spreading their petals, were formed into those of an almond tree.
8 And on the morrow Moses went into the tabernacle of the testimony; and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and blossomed, and yielded ripe almonds.
17:9 And Moses brought out all the rods from before YHWH unto all the children of Israel; and they looked, and took every man his rod.
9 Therefore, Moses brought out all the rods, from the sight of the Lord, to all the sons of Israel. And they saw, and each one received their rods.
17:10 And YHWH said unto Moses: 'Put back the rod of Aaron before the testimony, to be kept there, for a token against the rebellious children; that there may be made an end of their murmurings against Me, that they die not.'
17:11 Thus did Moses; as YHWH commanded him, so did he.
11 And Moses and Aaron did as the Lord commanded Moses, so did they.
17:12 And the children of Israel spoke unto Moses, saying: 'Behold, we perish, we are undone, we are all undone.
12 Then the sons of Israel said to Moses: “Behold, we have been consumed; we have been ruined.
17:13 Every one that cometh near, that cometh near unto the tabernacle of YHWH, is to die; shall we wholly perish?'
13 Whoever approaches to the tabernacle of the Lord dies. Will we all be wiped away, even to total annihilation?”
Nm17:28 Whosoever cometh any thing near unto the tabernacle of the LORD shall die: shall we be consumed with dying?
18:1 And YHWH said unto Aaron: 'Thou and thy sons and thy fathers' house with thee shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary; and thou and thy sons with thee shall bear the iniquity of your priesthood.
1 And the Lord spoke to Aaron, saying, Thou and thy sons and thy father’s house shall bear the sins of the holy things, and thou and thy sons shall bear the iniquity of your priesthood.
1 And the Lord said to Aaron: “You, and your sons, and the house of your father with you, shall carry the iniquity of the Sanctuary. And you and your sons together shall bear the sins of your priesthood.
18:2 And thy brethren also, the tribe of Levi, the tribe of thy father, bring thou near with thee, that they may be joined unto thee, and minister unto thee, thou and thy sons with thee being before the tent of the testimony.
2 But take to yourselves also your brothers from the tribe of Levi, and the scepter of your father, and may they be prepared, and may they minister to you. Then you and your sons shall minister in the tabernacle of the testimony.
18:3 And they shall keep thy charge, and the charge of all the Tent; only they shall not come nigh unto the holy furniture and unto the altar, that they die not, neither they, nor ye.
3 And the Levites shall stand watch by your precepts, and for all the works of the tabernacle; yet in such a manner that they shall not approach the vessels of the Sanctuary and of the altar, lest both they die, and you perish, at the same time.
3 And they shall keep your charge and the charge of all the tabernacle; but they shall not come near the vessels of the sanctuary and the vessels of the altar, that neither they, nor you also, die.
18:4 And they shall be joined unto thee, and keep the charge of the tent of meeting, whatsoever the service of the Tent may be; but a common man shall not draw nigh unto you.
4 But they may be with you, and they may watch over the care of the tabernacle and all its ceremonies. A foreigner shall not be mixed with you.
4 And they shall accompany you, and keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation for all the service of the tabernacle; and a stranger shall not come near you.
18:5 And ye shall keep the charge of the holy things, and the charge of the altar, that there be wrath no more upon the children of Israel.
5 Watch over the care of the Sanctuary, and over the ministry of the altar, lest an indignation may rise over the sons of Israel.
5 And you shall have charge of the sanctuary, and charge of the altar, that there be no wrath any more upon the children of Israel.
18:6 And I, behold, I have taken your brethren the Levites from among the children of Israel; for you they are given as a gift unto YHWH, to do the service of the tent of meeting.
6 I have given your brothers, the Levites, to you from the midst of the sons of Israel, and I have delivered them as a gift to the Lord, in order to serve in the ministries of his tabernacle.
18:7 And thou and thy sons with thee shall keep your priesthood in everything that pertaineth to the altar, and to that within the veil; and ye shall serve; I give you the priesthood as a service of gift; and the common man that draweth nigh shall be put to death.'
7 But as for you and your sons: guard the priesthood. For all that pertains to the service of the altar and of what is beyond the veil shall be exercised by the priests. If any outsider will approach, he shall be killed.”
7 Therefore you and your sons with you shall keep your priest's office for everything of the altar and within the veil; and you shall serve; I have given your priest's office as a gift; and the stranger who comes near shall be put to death.
18:8 And YHWH spoke unto Aaron: 'And I, behold, I have given thee the charge of My heave-offerings; even of all the hallowed things of the children of Israel unto thee have I given them for a consecrated portion, and to thy sons, as a due for ever.
8 And the Lord said to Aaron, And, behold, I have given you the charge of the first-fruits of all things consecrated to me by the children of Israel; and I have given them to thee as an honour, and to thy sons after thee for a perpetual ordinance.
8 And the Lord said to Aaron: “Behold, I have given you custody of my first-fruits. Everything that is sanctified by the sons of Israel I have delivered to you and your sons, for the office of the priesthood, by everlasting ordinances.
18:9 This shall be thine of the most holy things, reserved from the fire: every offering of theirs, even every meal-offering of theirs, and every sin-offering of theirs, and every guilt-offering of theirs, which they may render unto Me, shall be most holy for thee and for thy sons.
9 And let this be to you from all the holy things that are consecrated to me, even the burnt-offerings, from all their gifts, and from all their sacrifices, and from every trespass-offering of theirs, and from all their sin-offerings, whatever things they give to me of all their holy things, they shall be thine and thy sons’.
9 Therefore, you shall receive these, from the things that are sanctified and offered to the Lord. Every offering, and sacrifice, and whatever is repaid to me, on behalf of sin and also for offenses, and which becomes the Holy of holies, shall be for you and for your sons.
18:10 In a most holy place shalt thou eat thereof; every male may eat thereof; it shall be holy unto thee.
10 In the most holy place shall ye eat them; every male shall eat them, thou and thy sons: they shall be holy to thee.
10 You shall eat it in the Sanctuary. Only the males shall eat from it, because it has been consecrated for you.
18:11 And this is thine: the heave-offering of their gift, even all the wave-offerings of the children of Israel; I have given them unto thee, and to thy sons and to thy daughters with thee, as a due for ever; every one that is clean in thy house may eat thereof.
11 But the first-fruits, which the sons of Israel shall vow and offer, I have given to you, and to your sons, as well as to your daughters, by a perpetual right. Whoever is clean in your house shall eat them.
11 And this is the offering of your gifts, with all the wave offerings of the children of Israel; I have given them to you and to your sons and to your daughters with you, by a statute for ever; every one who is clean in your household shall eat of it.
18:12 All the best of the oil, and all the best of the wine, and of the corn, the first part of them which they give unto YHWH, to thee have I given them.
12 Every first-offering of oil, and every first-offering of wine, their first-fruits of corn, whatsoever they may give to the Lord, to thee have I given them.
12 All the innermost of the oil, and of the wine, and of the grain, whatever first-fruits they offer to the Lord, I have given to you.
18:13 The first-ripe fruits of all that is in their land, which they bring unto YHWH, shall be thine; every one that is clean in thy house may eat thereof.
13 All the first-fruits that are in their land, whatsoever they shall offer to the Lord, shall be thine: every clean person in thy house shall eat them.
18:14 Every thing devoted in Israel shall be thine.
14 All that the sons of Israel shall repay by vow shall be yours.
18:15 Every thing that openeth the womb, of all flesh which they offer unto YHWH, both of man and beast, shall be thine; howbeit the first-born of man shalt thou surely redeem, and the firstling of unclean beasts shalt thou redeem.
15 Whatever goes out first from the womb, of all flesh, which they offer to the Lord, whether from men or from cattle, shall be your right; yet only in so far as, for the firstborn of man, you shall accept a price. And every animal that is unclean you shall cause to be redeemed.
18:16 And their redemption-money--from a month old shalt thou redeem them--shall be, according to thy valuation, five shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary--the same is twenty gerahs.
16 And the redemption of them shall be from a month old; their valuation of five shekels—it is twenty oboli according to the holy shekel.
16 And those that are to be redeemed from a month old and upward shall you redeem, for a price of money of fifty shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, which is twenty gerahs.
18:17 But the firstling of an ox, or the firstling of a sheep, or the firstling of a goat, thou shalt not redeem; they are holy: thou shalt dash their blood against the altar, and shalt make their fat smoke for an offering made by fire, for a sweet savour unto YHWH.
17 But thou shalt not redeem the first-born of calves and the first-born of sheep and the first-born of goats; they are holy: and thou shalt pour their blood upon the altar, and thou shalt offer the fat as a burnt-offering for a smell of sweet savour to the Lord.
17 But the firstborn of a cow, or of a sheep, or of a goat, you shall not cause to be redeemed, because they have been sanctified to the Lord. Thus, their blood you shall pour out upon the altar, and their fat you shall burn as a most sweet odor to the Lord.
18:18 And the flesh of them shall be thine, as the wave-breast and as the right thigh, it shall be thine.
18 Yet truly, the flesh shall fall to your use, just as the consecrated breast and the right shoulder shall be yours.
18 But their meat shall be yours, as the wave breast and as the right shoulder are yours.
18:19 All the heave-offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer unto YHWH, have I given thee, and thy sons and thy daughters with thee, as a due for ever; it is an everlasting covenant of salt before the YHWH unto thee and to thy seed with thee.'
19 All the first-fruits of the Sanctuary, which the sons of Israel offer to the Lord, I have given to you and to your sons as well as to your daughters, as a perpetual right. It is an everlasting covenant of salt before the Lord, for you and for your sons.”
18:20 And YHWH said unto Aaron: 'Thou shalt have no inheritance in their land, neither shalt thou have any portion among them; I am thy portion and thine inheritance among the children of Israel.
20 And the Lord said to Aaron, Thou shalt have no inheritance in their land, neither shalt thou have any portion among them; for I am thy portion and thine inheritance in the midst of the children of Israel.
20 And the Lord said to Aaron: “In their land, you shall possess nothing; neither shall you have a portion among them. I am your portion and your inheritance in the midst of the sons of Israel.
18:21 And unto the children of Levi, behold, I have given all the tithe in Israel for an inheritance, in return for their service which they serve, even the service of the tent of meeting.
21 And, behold, I have given to the sons of Levi every tithe in Israel for an inheritance for their services, whereinsoever they perform ministry in the tabernacle of witness.
21 But I have given, to the sons of Levi, all the tithes of Israel as a possession, for the ministry by which they serve me in the tabernacle of the covenant,
18:22 And henceforth the children of Israel shall not come nigh the tent of meeting, lest they bear sin, and die.
22 And the children of Israel shall no more draw nigh to the tabernacle of witness to incur fatal guilt.
22 so that the sons of Israel may no longer approach to the tabernacle, nor commit deadly sin.
18:23 But the Levites alone shall do the service of the tent of meeting, and they shall bear their iniquity; it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations, and among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.
23 And the Levite himself shall perform the service of the tabernacle of witness; and they shall bear their iniquities, it is a perpetual statute throughout their generations; and in the midst of the children of Israel they shall not receive an inheritance.
23 Only the sons of Levi may serve me in the tabernacle and may carry the sins of the people. It shall be an everlasting ordinance in your generations. They shall possess nothing else;
18:24 For the tithe of the children of Israel, which they set apart as a gift unto YHWH, I have given to the Levites for an inheritance; therefore I have said unto them: Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.'
24 Because I have given as a distinct portion to the Levites for an inheritance the tithes of the children of Israel, whatsoever they shall offer to the Lord; therefore I said to them, In the midst of the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.
24 being content with the oblation of tithes, which I have separated for their uses and necessities.”
18:25 And YHWH spoke unto Moses, saying
25 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
18:26 'Moreover thou shalt speak unto the Levites, and say unto them: When ye take of the children of Israel the tithe which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall set apart of it a gift for YHWH, even a tithe of the tithe.
26 “Instruct the Levites, and also declare to them: When you will receive, from the sons of Israel, the tithes, which I have given to you, offer their first-fruits to the Lord, that is, the tenth part of a tenth,
18:27 And the gift which ye set apart shall be reckoned unto you, as though it were the corn of the threshing-floor, and as the fulness of the wine-press.
27 And your heave-offerings shall be reckoned to you as corn from the floor, and an offering from the wine-press.
27 so that it may be accounted to you as an oblation of the first-fruits, as much from the threshing floors as from the oil and wine presses.
18:28 Thus ye also shall set apart a gift unto YHWH of all your tithes, which ye receive of the children of Israel; and thereof ye shall give the gift which is set apart unto the YHWH to Aaron the priest.
28 So shall ye also separate them from all the offerings of the Lord out of all your tithes, whatsoever ye shall receive from the children of Israel; and ye shall give of them an offering to the Lord to Aaron the priest.
28 And offer the first-fruits of everything, from which you receive tithes, to the Lord, and give them to Aaron the priest.
18:29 Out of all that is given you ye shall set apart all of that which is due unto YHWH, of all the best thereof, even the hallowed part thereof out of it.
29 Of all your gifts ye shall offer an offering to the Lord, and of every first-fruit the consecrated part from it.
18:30 Therefore thou shalt say unto them: When ye set apart the best thereof from it, then it shall be counted unto the Levites as the increase of the threshing-floor, and as the increase of the wine-press.
30 And thou shalt say to them, When ye shall offer the first-fruits from it, then shall it be reckoned to the Levites as produce from the threshing-floor, and as produce from the wine-press.
30 And you shall say to them: ‘If you offer the noble and the better of the tithes, it shall be accounted to you as if you had given from the first-fruits of the threshing floor and of the oil and wine presses.’
18:31 And ye may eat it in every place, ye and your households; for it is your reward in return for your service in the tent of meeting.
31 And you shall eat these in all your places, both you and your families, because it is your price for the ministry, by which you serve in the tabernacle of the testimony.
18:32 And ye shall bear no sin by reason of it, seeing that ye have set apart from it the best thereof; and ye shall not profane the holy things of the children of Israel, that ye die not.'
32 And ye shall not bear sin by reason of it, for ye shall have offered an offering of first-fruits from it, and ye shall not profane the holy things of the children of Israel, that ye die not.
32 And you shall not sin in this way: by reserving the excellent and fat things for yourselves, lest you pollute the oblations of the sons of Israel, and lest you die.”
19:1 And YHWH spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying
1 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying,
19:2 This is the statute of the law which YHWH hath commanded, saying: Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring thee a red heifer, faultless, wherein is no blemish, and upon which never came yoke.
2 This is the constitution of the law, as the Lord has commanded, saying, Speak to the sons of Israel, and let them take for thee a red heifer without spot, which has no spot on her, and on which no yoke has been put.
2 “This is the ritual that the Lord has appointed for a victim. Instruct the sons of Israel, so that they may bring to you a red cow of full maturity, in which there is no blemish, and which has not carried a yoke.
19:3 And ye shall give her unto Eleazar the priest, and she shall be brought forth without the camp, and she shall be slain before his face.
3 And you shall deliver it to Eleazar the priest, who, having led it out beyond the camp, shall immolate it in the sight of all.
3 And you shall give her to Eleazar the priest, that he may bring her forth outside the camp, and one shall slaughter her in his sight;
19:4 And Eleazar the priest shall take of her blood with his finger, and sprinkle of her blood toward the front of the tent of meeting seven times.
4 And Eleazar shall take of her blood, and sprinkle of her blood seven times in front of the tabernacle of witness.
4 And dipping his finger in its blood, he shall sprinkle it seven times, opposite the door of the tabernacle.
19:5 And the heifer shall be burnt in his sight; her skin, and her flesh, and her blood, with her dung, shall be burnt.
5 And they shall burn her to ashes before him; and her skin and her flesh and her blood, with her dung, shall be consumed.
5 And he shall burn it, while all are watching, delivering into the flame, not only its skin and flesh, but also the blood and dung.
19:6 And the priest shall take cedar-wood, and hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the midst of the burning of the heifer.
6 Likewise, cedar wood, and hyssop, and twice-dyed scarlet he shall cast into the flame, by which the cow is consumed.
19:7 Then the priest shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he may come into the camp, and the priest shall be unclean until the even.
7 And the priest shall wash his garments, and bathe his body in water, and afterwards he shall go into the camp, and the priest shall be unclean till evening.
7 And then finally, having washed his garments and his body, he shall enter into the camp, and he shall be deeply stained until evening.
19:8 And he that burneth her shall wash his clothes in water, and bathe his flesh in water, and shall be unclean until the even.
8 Then he also who had burned it shall wash his garments and his body, and he shall be unclean until evening.
19:9 And a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up without the camp in a clean place, and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for a water of sprinkling; it is a purification from sin.
9 Then a clean man shall gather the ashes of the cow, and he shall pour them out beyond the camp, in a very pure place, so that they may be preserved for the multitude of the sons of Israel, and for the water of aspersion, because the cow was burned for sin.
19:10 And he that gathereth the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even; and it shall be unto the children of Israel, and unto the stranger that sojourneth among them, for a statute for ever.
10 And when he who had carried the ashes of the cow will have washed his garments, he shall be unclean until evening. The sons of Israel, and the newcomers who live among them, shall have this as a holy and perpetual right.
19:11 He that toucheth the dead, even any man's dead body, shall be unclean seven days;
11 Whoever touches the corpse of a man, and is, because of this, unclean for seven days,
11 He who touches the dead body of any man shall be unclean seven days.
19:12 the same shall purify himself therewith on the third day and on the seventh day, and he shall be clean; but if he purify not himself the third day and the seventh day, he shall not be clean.
19:13 Whosoever toucheth the dead, even the body of any man that is dead, and purifieth not himself--he hath defiled the tabernacle of YHWH--that soul shall be cut off from Israel; because the water of sprinkling was not dashed against him, he shall be unclean; his uncleanness is yet upon him.
13 Anyone who will have touched the dead body of a human life, and who has not been sprinkled with this mixture, pollutes the tabernacle of the Lord, and he shall perish out of Israel. For not having been sprinkled with the water of expiation, he shall be unclean, and his filth shall remain upon him.
19:14 This is the law: when a man dieth in a tent, every one that cometh into the tent, and every thing that is in the tent, shall be unclean seven days.
14 And this is the law; if a man die in a house, every one that goes into the house, and all things in the house, shall be unclean seven days.
14 This is the law of a man who dies in a tent. All who enter into his tent, and all the vessels which are there, shall be polluted for seven days.
19:15 And every open vessel, which hath no covering close-bound upon it, is unclean.
15 The vessel that has no cover or binding over it shall be unclean.
19:16 And whosoever in the open field toucheth one that is slain with a sword, or one that dieth of himself, or a bone of a man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days.
16 And every one who shall touch a man slain by violence, or a corpse, or human bone, or sepulchre, shall be unclean seven days.
19:17 And for the unclean they shall take of the ashes of the burning of the purification from sin, and running water shall be put thereto in a vessel.
17 And they shall take some of the ashes from the burning and the sin offering, and they shall pour living waters over them into a vessel.
19:18 And a clean person shall take hyssop, and dip it in the water, and sprinkle it upon the tent, and upon all the vessels, and upon the persons that were there, and upon him that touched the bone, or the slain, or the dead, or the grave.
18 And into it a man who is clean shall dip hyssop, and he shall sprinkle from it the entire tent, and all its articles, and the men who were polluted by means of contact.
19:19 And the clean person shall sprinkle upon the unclean on the third day, and on the seventh day; and on the seventh day he shall purify him; and he shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and shall be clean at even.
19 And so, in this manner, what is clean shall purify what is unclean, on the third and seventh days. And have been expiated on the seventh day, he shall wash both himself and his garments, and he shall be unclean until evening.
19:20 But the man that shall be unclean, and shall not purify himself, that soul shall be cut off from the midst of the assembly, because he hath defiled the sanctuary of YHWH; the water of sprinkling hath not been dashed against him: he is unclean.
20 And whatever man shall be defiled and shall not purify himself, that soul shall be cut off from the midst of the congregation, because he has defiled the holy things of the Lord, because the water of sprinkling has not been sprinkled upon him; he is unclean.
20 If anyone has not been expiated by this ritual, his soul shall perish from the midst of the Church. For he has polluted the Sanctuary of the Lord, and he has not been sprinkled with purifying waters.
19:21 And it shall be a perpetual statute unto them; and he that sprinkleth the water of sprinkling shall wash his clothes; and he that toucheth the water of sprinkling shall be unclean until even.
21 This precept shall be an everlasting ordinance. Likewise, the one who has sprinkled the waters shall wash his garments. All who will have touched the waters of expiation shall be unclean until evening.
19:22 And whatsoever the unclean person toucheth shall be unclean; and the soul that toucheth him shall be unclean until even.
22 Whatever has been touched by something unclean will itself be made unclean. And the soul who touches any of these things shall become unclean until evening.”
20:1 And the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month; and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.
1 And the sons of Israel, and the entire multitude, went into the desert of Sin, in the first month. And the people stayed at Kadesh. And Miriam died there, and she was buried in the same place.
20:2 And there was no water for the congregation; and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.
2 And when the people were in need of water, they came together against Moses and Aaron.
20:3 And the people strove with Moses, and spoke, saying: 'Would that we had perished when our brethren perished before YHWH!
3 And as it turned into sedition, they said: “If only we had perished among our brothers in the sight of the Lord.
3 And the people quarreled with Moses and with Aaron, saying, Would God that we had died with the death with which our brethren died before the LORD!
20:4 And why have ye brought the assembly of YHWH into this wilderness, to die there, we and our cattle?
4 And wherefore have ye brought up the congregation of the Lord into this wilderness, to kill us and our cattle?
4 Why have you led away the Church of the Lord, into the wilderness, so that both we and our cattle would die?
20:5 And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.'
5 And wherefore is this? Ye have brought us up out of Egypt, that we should come into this evil place; a place where there is no sowing, neither figs, nor vines, nor pomegranates, neither is there water to drink.
5 Why did you cause us to ascend from Egypt, and why have you led us into this most wretched place, which is not able to be sown, which does not produce figs, or vines, or pomegranates, and which, moreover, does not even have water to drink?”
20:6 And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tent of meeting, and fell upon their faces; and the glory of YHWH appeared unto them.
6 And Moses and Aaron, dismissing the multitude, entered the tabernacle of the covenant, and they fell prone on the ground, and they cried out to the Lord, and they said: “O Lord God, listen to the outcry of this people, and open for them, from your storehouse, a fountain of living water, so that, being satisfied, their murmuring may cease.” And the glory of the Lord appeared over them.
6 Then Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces; and the glory of the LORD appeared to them.
20:7 And YHWH spoke unto Moses, saying
7 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
20:8 'Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes, that it give forth its water; and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock; so thou shalt give the congregation and their cattle drink.'
8 Take thy rod, and call the assembly, thou and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye to the rock before them, and it shall give forth its waters; and ye shall bring forth for them water out of the rock, and give drink to the congregation and their cattle.
8 “Take the rod, and gather the people, you and your brother Aaron, and speak to the rock before them, and it shall bestow waters. And when you have brought forth water from the rock, the entire multitude and their cattle shall drink.”
20:9 And Moses took the rod from before YHWH, as He commanded him.
9 Therefore, Moses took the rod, which was in the sight of the Lord, just as he had instructed him.
20:10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said unto them: 'Hear now, ye rebels; are we to bring you forth water out of this rock?'
10 And having gathered the multitude before the rock, he said to them: “Listen, you who are rebellious and unbelieving. Would we be able to cast out water from this rock?”
20:11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and smote the rock with his rod twice; and water came forth abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their cattle.
11 And when Moses had lifted up his hand, striking the stone twice with the rod, very great waters went forth, so much so that the people and their cattle were able to drink.
20:12 And YHWH said unto Moses and Aaron: 'Because ye believed not in Me, to sanctify Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.'
12 And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, Because ye have not believed me to sanctify me before the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.
20:13 These are the waters of Meribah, where the children of Israel strove with YHWH, and He was sanctified in them.
13 This is the water of Strife, because the children of Israel spoke insolently before the Lord, and he was sanctified in them.
13 This is the water of Meribah, because the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and he was sanctified in them. And Moses said: LORD, you began to show servant of you greatness and the strong hand. Who will do in heavens and in the earth that which you would do as deeds of you and as forces of you. Let me cross over, please, and I shall see the earth good which is across the Jordan, this good mountain and Lebanon. And the LORD said to Moses: enough of you to talk to me about this. Rise to the top of the Pisgah, and lift your eyes toward the west, and the north and the south and the east, and see you with your eyes, as not you are going to cross this Jordan. And command with Joshua son of Nun, and strengthen him and encourage him: for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which thou shalt see. And the LORD said to Moses to say: multitudes of you should turn around this mountain and face the north. And as it was commanded, say to the ones crossing over in the boundary brothers of you, sons of Esau, the ones dwelling in Seir. And they will fear you and you will be very careful as not to anger them, as I will not give you the land which he occupies, not even as much as of a foot. As to Esau I gave the mountain Seir. Purchase from them food that you need to eat, and for the water to drink you shall pay with silver.
20:14 And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom: 'Thus saith thy brother Israel: Thou knowest all the travail that hath befallen us;
14 Meanwhile, Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom. They said: “Your brother Israel says this: You know of all the hardships which have overtaken us,
20:15 how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians dealt ill with us, and our fathers;
15 And how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we sojourned in Egypt many days, and the Egyptians afflicted us and our fathers.
20:16 and when we cried unto YHWH, He heard our voice, and sent an angel, and brought us forth out of Egypt; and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border.
16 And we cried to the Lord, and the Lord heard our voice, and sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt; and now we are in the city of Cades, at the extremity of thy coasts.
16 and how we cried out to the Lord, and he heeded us and sent an Angel, who led us away from Egypt. Behold, we are situated in the city of Kadesh, which is at the extremity of your borders.
20:17 Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy land; we will not pass through field or through vineyard, neither will we drink of the water of the wells; we will go along the king's highway, we will not turn aside to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy border.'
17 And we beg you to permit us to cross through your land. We will not go through the fields, nor through the vineyards; we will not drink the waters of your wells, but we will travel by the public ways, neither turning aside to the right, nor to the left, until we have passed your borders.”
17 Now let us pass through your land; we will not pass through the fields, nor through the vineyards, neither will we drink the water of the wells; but we will go by the king's highway, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left until we have passed your borders.
20:18 And Edom said unto him: 'Thou shalt not pass through me, lest I come out with the sword against thee.'
18 Edom responded to them: “You shall not cross through me, otherwise, I will meet you armed.”
18 But Edom said to him, You shall not pass through my border, lest I come out against you with the sword.
20:19 And the children of Israel said unto him: 'We will go up by the highway; and if we drink of thy water, I and my cattle, then will I give the price thereof; let me only pass through on my feet; there is no hurt.'
19 And the sons of Israel said: “We will travel by the well-trodden path. And if we or our cattle drink from your waters, we will give you what is just. There shall be no difficulty in the price, only let us cross through quickly.”
20:20 And he said: 'Thou shalt not pass through.' And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.
20 But he answered, “You shall not cross.” And immediately he went out to meet them with a countless multitude and a strong hand;
20 But Edom said. You shall not pass through. And Edom came out against them with a strong force, and with a strong hand.
20:21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border; wherefore Israel turned away from him.
21 So Edom refused to allow Israel to pass through his borders, and Israel turned away from him.
21 neither was he willing to agree to their petition to concede passage through his borders. For this reason, Israel diverted away from him.
20:22 And they journeyed from Kadesh; and the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came unto mount Hor.
22 And when they had moved the camp from Kadesh, they arrived at mount Hor, which is at the borders of the land of Edom,
20:23 And YHWH spoke unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor, by the border of the land of Edom, saying
23 where the Lord spoke to Moses
23 And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron at mount Hor by the border of the land of Edom,
20:24 'Aaron shall be gathered unto his people; for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against My word at the waters of Meribah.
24 Let Aaron be added to his people; for ye shall certainly not go into the land which I have given the children of Israel, because ye provoked me at the water of strife.
24 “Let Aaron,” he said, “go to his people. For he shall not enter into the land which I have given to the sons of Israel, because he did not believe my mouth at the Waters of Contradiction.
20:25 Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up unto mount Hor.
25 Take Aaron, and Eleazar his son, and bring them up to the mount Or before all the congregation;
25 Take Aaron, and his son with him, and lead them on to mount Hor.
20:26 And strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron shall be gathered unto his people, and shall die there.'
26 and take Aaron’s apparel from off him, and put it on Eleazar his son: and let Aaron die there and be added to his people.
26 And when you have stripped the father of his vestments, you shall put them on Eleazar, his son. Aaron shall be gathered and shall die there.”
20:27 And Moses did as YHWH commanded; and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.
27 Moses did just as the Lord had instructed. And they ascended mount Hor, in the sight of the entire multitude.
20:28 And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there in the top of the mount; and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mount.
28 And he took Aaron’s garments off him, and put them on Eleazar his son, and Aaron died on the top of the mountain; and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain.
28 And when he had despoiled Aaron of his vestments, he clothed his son Eleazar with them.
29 And when Aaron had died at the top of the mountain, Moses came down with Eleazar.
20:29 And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they wept for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel.
29 And the entire multitude, seeing that Aaron lay dead, wept over him for thirty days, throughout all their families.
21:1 And the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who dwelt in the South, heard tell that Israel came by the way of Atharim; and he fought against Israel, and took some of them captive.
1 And when king Arad the Canaanite, who was living toward the south, had heard this, namely, that Israel had arrived by the way of spies, he fought against them. And proving to be the victor, he led away prey from them.
21:2 And Israel vowed a vow unto YHWH, and said: 'If Thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.'
2 But Israel, obliging himself by a vow to the Lord, said: “If you deliver this people into my hand, I will wipe away their cities.”
21:3 And YHWH hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities; and the name of the place was called Hormah.
3 And the Lord hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered the Chananite into his power; and Israel devoted him and his cities, and they called the name of that place Anathema.
21:4 And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom; and the soul of the people became impatient because of the way.
4 And having departed from mount Or by the way leading to the Red Sea, they compassed the land of Edom, and the people lost courage by the way.
4 Then they set out from mount Hor, by the way that leads to the Red Sea, to circle around the land of Edom. And the people began to tire of their journey and hardships.
21:5 And the people spoke against God, and against Moses: 'Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, and there is no water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.'
5 And speaking against God and Moses, they said: “Why did you lead us away from Egypt, so as to die in the wilderness? Bread is lacking; there are no waters. Our soul is now nauseous over this very light food.”
5 And the people murmured against God and against Moses, saying, Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For neither is there bread, nor water; and our soul is wearied with this inferior bread (manna).
21:6 And YHWH sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
6 And the Lord sent among the people deadly serpents, and they bit the people, and much people of the children of Israel died.
6 For this reason, the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, which wounded or killed many of them.
21:7 And the people came to Moses, and said: 'We have sinned, because we have spoken against YHWH, and against thee; pray unto the YHWH, that He take away the serpents from us.' And Moses prayed for the people.
7 And so they went to Moses, and they said: “We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray, so that he may take away these serpents from us.” And Moses prayed for the people.
7 Therefore the people came to Moses and said to him, We have sinned, for we have murmured against the LORD and against you; pray before the LORD, that he take the serpents away from us. And Moses prayed for the people.
21:8 And YHWH said unto Moses: 'Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole; and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he seeth it, shall live.'
8 And Moses prayed to the Lord for the people; and the Lord said to Moses, Make thee a serpent, and put it on a signal-staff; and it shall come to pass that whenever a serpent shall bite a man, every one so bitten that looks upon it shall live.
8 And the Lord said to him: “Make a bronze serpent, and place it as a sign. Whoever, having been struck, gazes upon it, shall live.”
21:9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and set it upon the pole; and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked unto the serpent of brass, he lived.
9 Therefore, Moses made a bronze serpent, and he placed it as a sign. When those who had been struck gazed upon it, they were healed.
21:10 And the children of Israel journeyed, and pitched in Oboth.
10 And the sons of Israel, setting out, made camp at Oboth.
21:11 And they journeyed from Oboth, and pitched at Ije-abarim, in the wilderness which is in front of Moab, toward the sun-rising.
11 And having departed from Oboth, they encamped in Achalgai, on the farther side in the wilderness, which is opposite Moab, toward the east.
11 Having departed from there, they pitched their tents at Iye-abarim, in the wilderness, which looks out toward Moab, opposite the eastern region.
21:12 From thence they journeyed, and pitched in the valley of Zered.
12 And moving from there, they arrived at the Torrent of Zared.
12 And the LORD said to Moses: Don't besiege Moab and don't anger them, as I will not give you his land for a possession. Because I gave Ar to the sons of Lot for a possession. From thence they removed, and pitched in the valley of Zared.
21:13 From thence they journeyed, and pitched on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness, that cometh out of the border of the Amorites.--For Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites;
13 Having left that place behind, they then made camp opposite Arnon, which is in the desert, and which juts out at the borders of the Amorite. For certainly Arnon is at the limit of Moab, dividing the Moabites and the Amorites.
13 And the LORD said to Moses to say: You are today before the boundary of Moab. Be watchful when you come near the sons of Ammon. And not besiege and anger them as I will not give you from the land of sons of Ammon for a possession, because to the sons of Lot I gave it for a possession. From thence they removed, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, which is over in the wilderness that cometh out of the coasts of the Amorites: for Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.
21:14 wherefore it is said in the book of the Wars of YHWH: Vaheb in Suphah, and the valleys of Arnon,
14 Therefore it is said in a book, A war of the Lord has set on fire Zoob, and the brooks of Arnon.
14 About this place, it is said in the book of the wars of the Lord: “As he did at the Red Sea, so will he do at the Torrents of Arnon.”
21:15 And the slope of the valleys that inclineth toward the seat of Ar, and leaneth upon the border of Moab.--
15 The stones of the torrents were bent, so that they might rest in Ar and lie back within the borders of the Moabites.
21:16 And from thence to Beer; that is the well whereof YHWH said unto Moses: 'Gather the people together, and I will give them water.'
16 And thence they came to the well; this is the well of which the Lord said to Moses, Gather the people, and I will give them water to drink.
16 Beyond that place appeared a well, about which the Lord said to Moses: “Gather the people together, and I will give them water.”
21:17 Then sang Israel this song: Spring up, O well--sing ye unto it--
17 Then Israel sang this song at the well, Begin to sing of the well;
21:18 The well, which the princes digged, which the nobles of the people delved, with the sceptre, and with their staves. And from the wilderness to Mattanah;
18 the princes digged it, the kings of the nations in their kingdom, in their lordship sank it in the rock: and they went from the well to Manthanain,
18 “The well, the leaders dug it, and the commanders of the multitude prepared it, at the direction of the lawgiver, and with their staffs.”
21:19 and from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel to Bamoth;
19 and from Manthanain to Naaliel, and from Naaliel to Bamoth, and from Bamoth to Janen, which is in the plain of Moab as seen from the top of the quarried rock that looks toward the wilderness.
19 They went from the wilderness to Mattanah, from Mattanah to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel to Bamoth,
21:20 and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the field of Moab, by the top of Pisgah, which looketh down upon the desert.
20 And Moses sent ambassadors to Seon king of the Amorites, with peaceable words, saying,
20 from Bamoth, a valley in the region of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looks out opposite the desert.
21:21 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying
21 We will pass through thy land, we will go by the road; we will not turn aside to the field or to the vineyard.
21 And the LORD said to Moses: Arise and jorney and pass the stream of Arnon. And see that I give in your hand Sihon king of Heshbon of Amorites. And begin to possess his land and anger him in war. As today I begin to give awe and fears before the faces of the people under all heavens. And when they will hear you, they will quiver and writhe from your face. And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites with sayings of peace, saying
21:22 'Let me pass through thy land; we will not turn aside into field, or into vineyard; we will not drink of the water of the wells; we will go by the king's highway, until we have passed thy border.'
22 We will not drink water out of thy well; we will go by the king’s highway, until we have past thy boundaries.
22 Let me pass through thy land: in way of the king I shall go and not stray right or left. We will not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; food with silver we shall buy to eat, and water with silver we shall purchase from you to drink. Only allow me to cross over as they allowed us sons of Esau, the ones dwelling in Seir, and Moabites that dwell in Ar, until we cross your boundary.
21:23 And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness, and came to Jahaz; and he fought against Israel.
21:24 And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon unto the Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.
24 And he was struck down by them with the edge of the sword, and they possessed his land from Arnon, even to Jabbok and the sons of Ammon. For the borders of the Ammonites were held by a strong fortress.
21:25 And Israel took all these cities; and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the towns thereof.
25 Therefore, Israel took all his cities and lived in the cities of the Amorite, namely, in Heshbon and its villages.
21:26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto the Arnon.
26 For Esebon is the city of Seon king of the Amorites; and he before fought against the king of Moab, and they took all his land, from Aroer to Arnon.
26 Heshbon was the city of Sihon, the king of the Amorites, who fought against the king of Moab. And he took all the land, which had been under his sovereignty, as far as Arnon.
21:27 Wherefore they that speak in parables say: Come ye to Heshbon! let the city of Sihon be built and established!
27 Therefore say they who deal in dark speeches, Come to Esebon, that the city of Seon may be built and prepared.
27 About this, it is said in the proverb: “Enter into Heshbon. Let the city of Sihon be established and built.
21:28 For a fire is gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it hath devoured Ar of Moab, the lords of the high places of Arnon.
28 For a fire has gone forth from Esebon, a flame from the city of Seon, and has consumed as far as Moab, and devoured the pillars of Arnon.
28 A fire has gone forth from Heshbon, a flame from the town of Sihon, and it has devoured Ar of the Moabites, and the inhabitants of the heights of Arnon.
21:29 Woe to thee, Moab! thou art undone, O people of Chemosh; he hath given his sons as fugitives, and his daughters into captivity, unto Sihon king of the Amorites.
29 Woe to thee, Moab; thou art lost, thou people of Chamos: their sons are sold for preservation, and their daughters are captives to Seon king of the Amorites.
29 Woe to you, O Arnon! Woe to you, O Moab! You are destroyed, O people of Chemosh; he has given his sons hostages, and his daughters into captivity to Sihon king of the Amorites.
21:30 We have shot at them--Heshbon is perished--even unto Dibon, and we have laid waste even unto Nophah, which reacheth unto Medeba.
30 And their seed shall perish from Esebon to Daebon; and their women have yet farther kindled a fire against Moab.
30 The fields of Heshbon have perished as far as Ribon, and have been laid waste as far as Lanhakh, which is in the wilderness.
21:31 Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.
31 And Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites.
31 And so Israel lived in the land of the Amorite.
21:32 And Moses sent to spy out Jazer, and they took the towns thereof, and drove out the Amorites that were there.
32 And Moses sent some to explore Jazer. These captured its villages and possessed its inhabitants.
21:33 And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan; and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.
33 And having returned, they went up the road that leads to Basan; and Og the king of Basan went forth to meet them, and all his people to war to Edrain.
33 And they turned themselves and ascended, along the way of Bashan. And Og, the king of Bashan, met them with all his people, to fight at Edrei.
21:34 And YHWH said unto Moses: 'Fear him not; for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.'
34 And the Lord said to Moses: “Do not be afraid of him. For I have delivered him, and all his people, as well as his land, into your hand. And you shall do to him just as you did to Sihon, the king of the Amorites, the inhabitant of Heshbon.”
21:35 So they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him remaining; and they possessed his land.
35 And he smote him and his sons, and all his people, until he left none of his to be taken alive; and they inherited his land.
35 Therefore, they struck him down also, with his sons, and all his people, even to utter destruction, and they possessed his land.
