1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2  He was in the beginning with God.

3  All things came to be through Him, and without Him nothing came to be which has come to be.

3  Everything came to be by his hand; and without him not even one thing came to be of what was created.

3  All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4  In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

4  The life was in him, and the life is the light of men.

5  And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not apprehend it.

6  There was a man sent from God, whose name [was] John.

7  This [man] came for a testimony, so that he might testify concerning the Light, so that all through him might believe.

13  who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14  And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

15  John testified concerning Him and has cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, 'He who comes after me, has come to be before me, because He was before me.' "

15  John beareth witness of him, and crieth, saying, This was he of whom I said, He that cometh after me is become before me: for he was before me.

16  And out of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace.

22  Then they said to him, "Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?"

22  They said therefore unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

23  He said: "I am 'The voice of one crying in the wilderness: "Make straight the way of YHWH,"' just as Isaiah the prophet said."

23  He said, “I am a voice crying out in the desert, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ just as the prophet Isaiah said.”

24  Now those who had been sent were from the Pharisees.

25  And they asked him, saying, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"

25  And they questioned him and said to him, “Then why do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, and not the Prophet?”

26  John answered them, saying, "I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know.

27  He is the [One ]who comes after me, who has come to be before me, of whom I am not worthy that I should loose the strap of His sandal."

28  These things happened in Bethany, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

29  The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

29  On the morrow he seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold, the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world!

30  This is the [One] about whom I said, 'After me comes a Man who ranks before me, because He was before me.'

30  This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man who is become before me: for he was before me.

31  "I did not know Him; but that He should be made manifest to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water."

31  And I did not know him. Yet it is for this reason that I come baptizing with water: so that he may be made manifest in Israel.”

32  And John testified, saying, "I have beheld the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him.

32  And John bare witness, saying, I have beheld the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven; and it abode upon him.

33  I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'Upon whom you see the Spirit descending and abiding on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'

33  And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize in water, he said unto me, Upon whomsoever thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and abiding upon him, the same is he that baptizeth in the Holy Spirit.

33  And I did not know him. But he who sent me to baptize with water said to me: ‘He over whom you will see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him, this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

34  "And I have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God."

35  Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples.

38  And Jesus turned around and saw them following him, and he said to them, What do you want? They said to him, Rabbi (Teacher), where do you live?

39  He said to them, "Come and see."They came and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day. It was about the tenth hour.

39  He saith unto them, Come, and ye shall see. They came therefore and saw where he abode; and they abode with him that day: it was about the tenth hour.

40  One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

40  And Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who had heard about him from John and had followed him.

41  He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, "We have found the Messiah"(which is translated, the Christ).

43  On the next day He wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, "Follow Me."

47  Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said about him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!"

48  Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.

49  Nathanael answered and said to Him, "Rabbi, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!"

50  Jesus answered and said to him, "Because I said to you, 'I saw you under the fig tree,' do you believe? You will see greater things than these."

51  And He said to him, "Most assuredly I say to you, from now on you shall see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man."

51  And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye shall see the heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

2:1  And on the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.

2:5  His mother said to the servants, "Whatever He may say to you, do."

2:6  Now there were six stone water jars standing there, according to the purification rites of the Jews, each holding two or three measures.

6  And there were six stone jars placed there for the purification of the Jews, which could hold several gallons each.

6  And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.

2:7  Jesus said to them, "Fill the water jars with water."And they filled them up to the top.

2:8  And He said to them, "Draw out now, and carry [some] to the head steward."And they carried [it].

8  Then he said to them, Draw out now, and bring it to the chief guest of the feast. And they brought it.

2:9  Now when the head steward tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the head steward called the bridegroom

9  And when the ruler of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and knew not whence it was (but the servants that had drawn the water knew), the ruler of the feast calleth the bridegroom,

9  Then, when the chief steward had tasted the water made into wine, since he did not know where it was from, for only the servants who had drawn the water knew, the chief steward called the groom,

2:10  and said to him, "Every man first sets out the good wine, and when they have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!"

10  and saith unto him, Every man setteth on first the good wine; and when [men] have drunk freely, [then] that which is worse: thou hast kept the good wine until now.

10  and he said to him: “Every man offers the good wine first, and then, when they have become inebriated, he offers what is worse. But you have kept the good wine until now.”

2:11  This beginning of the signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.

2:14  And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the moneychangers sitting there.

2:15  And having made a scourge out of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and He poured out the coins of the moneychangers, and He overturned the tables.

2:16  And He said to those selling the doves, "Take these things [away] from here! Do not make My Father's house a house of merchandise!"

16  And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.

2:17  Then His disciples remembered that it was written, "The zeal for Your house will consume Me."

17  And truly, his disciples were reminded that it is written: “Zeal for your house consumes me.”

2:18  Therefore the Jews answered and said to Him, "What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?"

2:19  Jesus answered and said to them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up."

2:20  Then the Jews said, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?"

20  The Jews said to him, It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?

2:21  But He was speaking about the temple of His body.

2:22  Therefore, when He was raised up from among the dead, His disciples remembered that He spoke this [thing,] and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.

22  When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he spake this; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.

2:23  Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, at the feast, many believed on His name, beholding the signs which He was doing.

23  Now while he was at Jerusalem during the Passover, on the day of the feast, many trusted in his name, seeing his signs that he was accomplishing.

23  Now when Jesus was in Jerusalem at the passover, during the feast, a great many believed in him, because they saw the miracles which he did.

2:24  But Jesus did not trust Himself to them, because He knew all [men],

2:25  and had no need that anyone should testify concerning man, for He himself knew what was in man.

25  and because he had no need of anyone to offer testimony about a man. For he knew what was within a man.

25  And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

3:1  Now there was a man of the Pharisees whose name [was] Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

1  THERE was there a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews;

3:2  This [man] came to Him by night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that You have come from God [as] a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him."

2  He went to Jesus at night, and he said to him: “Rabbi, we know that you have arrived as a teacher from God. For no one would be able to accomplish these signs, which you accomplish, unless God were with him.”

3:3  Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

3  Jesus responded and said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless one has been reborn anew, he is not able to see the kingdom of God.”

3:4  Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born, being old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?"

3:5  Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless someone is born of water and of Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

3:6  That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

6  What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.

3:7  Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.'

7  Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born anew.

7  You should not be amazed that I said to you: You must be born anew.

3:8  "The wind blows where it wills, and you hear its sound, but you do not know from where it comes and where it goes. So is everyone who has been born of the Spirit."

8  The wind bloweth where it will, and thou hearest the voice thereof, but knowest not whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

8  The Spirit inspires where he wills. And you hear his voice, but you do not know where he comes from, or where he is going. So it is with all who are born of the Spirit.”

3:9  Nicodemus answered and said to Him, "How can these things be?"

9  Nicodemus responded and said to him, “How are these things able to be accomplished?”

3:10  Jesus answered and said to him, "Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things?

10  Jesus responded and said to him: “You are a teacher in Israel, and you are ignorant of these things?

3:11  Most assuredly I say to you, that which We know, We speak, and that which We have seen, We bear witness to, and you do not receive Our witness.

11  Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that which we know, and bear witness of that which we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.

11  Amen, amen, I say to you, that we speak about what we know, and we testify about what we have seen. But you do not accept our testimony.

3:12  If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

12  If I have spoken to you about earthly things, and you have not believed, then how will you believe, if I will speak to you about heavenly things?

3:13  And no one has gone up into heaven except He who came down out of heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven.

13  And no one hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended out of heaven, [even] the Son of man, who is in heaven.

13  No man has ascended to heaven, except he who came down from heaven, even the Son of man who is in heaven.

3:14  And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

3:15  that everyone who believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

15  that whosoever believeth may in him have eternal life.

3:16  For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

3:17  For God did not send His Son into the world so that He might condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

17  For God sent not the Son into the world to judge the world; but that the world should be saved through him.

3:18  He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe has been condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

18  He that believeth on him is not judged: he that believeth not hath been judged already, because he hath not believed on the name of the only begotten Son of God.

18  Whoever believes in him is not judged. But whoever does not believe is already judged, because he does not believe in the name of the only-begotten Son of God.

3:19  And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness more than the light, because their works were evil.

3:20  For everyone that does evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works be exposed.

20  For every one who does detested things hates the light, and he does not come to the light, because his works cannot be covered.

20  For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

3:21  But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his works may be revealed, that they have been done in God."

21  But whoever acts in truth goes toward the Light, so that his works may be manifested, because they have been accomplished in God.”

21  But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

3:22  After these things Jesus, along with His disciples, came into the land of Judea, and there He was staying with them and He was baptizing.

3:23  Now John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salem, because there was much water there. And they came and were baptized.

23  John also was baptizing at the spring of Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there; and they came, and were baptized.

3:24  For John was not yet cast into prison.

3:25  Then there came to be a dispute between John's disciples and a Jew about purification.

25  There arose therefore a questioning on the part of John`s disciples with a Jew about purifying.

25  Now it happened that a dispute arose between one of JohnÆs disciples and a Jew about the ceremony of purifying.

3:26  And they came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified-behold, this [Man] is baptizing, and all [men] are coming to Him!"

26  And they came unto John, and said to him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond the Jordan, to whom thou hast borne witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.

26  So they came to John and told him, Teacher, he who was with you at the Jordan crossing, concerning whom you testified, behold, he also is baptizing and a great many are coming to him.

3:27  John answered and said, "A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven.

27  John responded and said: “A man is not able to receive anything, unless it has been given to him from heaven.

3:28  You yourselves bear witness that I said, 'I am not the Christ,' but, 'I have been sent before Him.'

3:29  "He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the voice of the bridegroom. Therefore my joy has been fulfilled.

29  He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, that standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom`s voice: this my joy therefore is made full.

29  He who holds the bride is the groom. But the friend of the groom, who stands and listens to Him, rejoices joyfully at the voice of the groom. And so, this, my joy, has been fulfilled.

3:30  He must increase, but I must decrease.

3:31  He who comes from above is above all; he who is from the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.

31  He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is of the earth, and of the earth he speaketh: he that cometh from heaven is above all.

31  For he who has come from above is above all; and he who is of the earth is of the earth, and he speaks of earthly things; but he who has come from heaven is above all.

3:32  And what He has seen and heard, that He testifies; and no one receives His testimony.

3:33  He who receives His testimony has certified that God is true.

33  He that hath received his witness hath set his seal to [this], that God is true.

33  Whoever has accepted his testimony has certified that God is truthful.

3:34  For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure.

3:35  The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand.

3:36  He who believes in the Son has eternal life; and he who does not believe the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."

36  He that believeth on the Son hath eternal life; but he that obeyeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.

36  Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. But whoever is unbelieving toward the Son shall not see life; instead the wrath of God remains upon him.”

4:1  Therefore, when YHWH knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and was baptizing more disciples than John

1  And so, when Jesus realized that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made more disciples and baptized more than John,

4:2  (although Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His disciples),

2  Though Jesus himself did not baptize, but his disciples;

4:3  He left Judea and went away into Galilee.

3  he left behind Judea, and he traveled again to Galilee.

4:4  But He needed to pass through Samaria.

4  And he must needs pass through Samaria.

4  He had to go through Samaritan territory.

4:5  Therefore He came to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near the piece of land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

5  So he cometh to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph

4:7  A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink."

4:8  For His disciples had gone away into the city, that they might buy provisions.

9  The Samaritan woman therefore saith unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, who am a Samaritan woman? (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)

9  And so, that Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, being a Jew, are requesting a drink from me, though I am a Samaritan woman?” For the Jews do not associate with the Samaritans.

4:10  Jesus answered and said to her, "If you had known the gift of God, and who it is that says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given to you living water."

4:11  The woman said to Him, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water?

4:12  Are You greater than our father Jacob,[ ]who gave us the well, and drank of it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?"

12  Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his sons, and his cattle?

4:13  Jesus answered and said to her, "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again,

13  Jesus responded and said to her: “All who drink from this water will thirst again. But whoever shall drink from the water that I will give to him will not thirst for eternity.

4:14  but whoever drinks of the water which I shall give him will by no means ever thirst again. But the water which I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into eternal life."

14  but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up unto eternal life.

14  Instead, the water that I will give to him will become in him a fountain of water, springing up into eternal life.”

4:15  The woman said to Him, "Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw."

4:16  Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here."

4:17  The woman answered and said, "I have no husband."Jesus said to her, "You have said well, 'I have no husband,'

17  The woman responded and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her: “You have spoken well, in saying, ‘I have no husband.’

17  She said to him, I have no husband; Jesus said to her, You said well, I have no husband;

4:18  "for you have had five husbands, and [the one] whom you now have is not your husband; in this you have said truly."

18  for thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: this hast thou said truly.

4:19  The woman said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.

19  Then the woman said to him, My lord, I see that you are a prophet.

4:20  Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, and you [Jews] say that in Jerusalem is the place where it is necessary to worship."

20  Our forefathers worshipped on this mountain; and you say the place where men must worship is in Jerusalem.

4:21  Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father.

4:22  You worship what you do not know; we [Jews ]worship what we know, because salvation is of the Jews.

22  Ye worship that which ye know not: we worship that which we know; for salvation is from the Jews.

4:23  But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.

23  But the time is coming, and it is here, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father also desires worshippers such as these.

4:24  God [is] Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

24  For God is Spirit; and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

4:25  The woman said to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming"(who is called Christ). "When He comes, He will proclaim to us all things."

25  The woman saith unto him, I know that Messiah cometh (he that is called Christ): when he is come, he will declare unto us all things.

25  The woman said to him: “I know that the Messiah is coming (who is called the Christ). And then, when he will have arrived, he will announce everything to us.”

4:26  Jesus said to her, "I am [He,] the [One ]speaking to you."

26  Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am [he].

4:27  And at this point His disciples came, and they marveled that He was speaking with a woman; however no one said, "What do You seek?"or, "Why are You speaking with her?"

27  While he was talking, his disciples came, and they were surprised that he was talking with a married woman; but no one said to him, What do you want? or, What are you talking with her?

4:28  The woman then left her water jar, went her way into the city, and said to the men,

28  So the woman left her waterpot, and went away into the city, and saith to the people,

28  And so the woman left behind her water jar and went into the city. And she said to the men there

4:29  Come, see a Man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?"

29  “Come and see a man who has told me all the things that I have done. Is he not the Christ?”

29  Come and see a man who told me everything which I have done; why, is he the Christ?

4:30  They went out of the city and were coming to Him.

30  Therefore, they went out of the city and came to him.

30  And the men went out of the city, and came to him.

4:31  But in the meantime the disciples urged Him, saying, "Rabbi, eat."

31  In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.

4:32  But He said to them, "I have food to eat of which you do not know."

4:33  Therefore the disciples were saying to one another, "Has anyone brought Him [something] to eat?"

33  The disciples therefore said one to another, Hath any man brought him [aught] to eat?

33  The disciples said among themselves, Why, did any man bring him something to eat?

4:34  Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.

34  Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to accomplish his work.

4:35  Do you not say, 'There are still four months and the harvest comes'? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and see the fields, for they are already white for harvest!

35  Say not ye, There are yet four months, and [then] cometh the harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, that they are white already unto harvest.

4:36  And he who[ ]reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit unto eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.

36  He that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal; that he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.

4:37  For in this the saying is true: 'One sows and another reaps.'

37  For herein is the saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.

4:38  "I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors."

38  I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.

4:39  And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman testifying, "He told me everything I ever did."

39  Now many of the Samaritans from that city believed in him, because of the word of the woman who was offering testimony: “For he told me all the things that I have done.”

4:40  So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days.

40  Therefore, when the Samaritans had come to him, they petitioned him to lodge there. And he lodged there for two days.

4:41  And many more believed because of His word.

41  And a great many believed in him because of his word;

4:42  Then they were saying to the woman, "No longer because of your speech do we believe, for we ourselves have heard and know that this is truly the Christ, the Savior of the world."

42  and they said to the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy speaking: for we have heard for ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world.

42  And they were saying to the woman, Henceforth it is not because of your word that we believe him; for we ourselves have heard and know, that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.

4:43  Now after the two days He went out from there and went to Galilee.

43  Then, after two days, he departed from there, and he traveled into Galilee.

43  Two days later, Jesus departed thence and went to Galilee.

4:44  For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.

4:45  Therefore when He came into Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen all the things which He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they also went to the feast.

45  And so, when he had arrived in Galilee, the Galileans received him, because they had seen all that he had done at Jerusalem, in the day of the feast. For they also went to the feast day.

4:46  Then Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee where He made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick in Capernaum.

4:47  When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and asked Him that He might come down and heal his son, for he was about to die.

47  Since he had heard that Jesus came to Galilee from Judea, he sent to him and begged him to come down and heal his son. For he was beginning to die.

47  This man heard that Jesus had come from Judaea to Galilee; so he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son; for he was near death.

4:48  Then Jesus said to him, "Unless you [people] see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe."

48  Jesus therefore said unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will in no wise believe.

4:49  The nobleman said to Him, "Sir, come down before my child dies!"

49  The ruler said to him, “Lord, come down before my son dies.”

49  The kingÆs servant said to him, My Lord, come down before the boy is dead.

4:50  Jesus said to him, "Go; your son lives."And the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and went away.

50  Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. The man believed the word that Jesus spake unto him, and he went his way.

4:51  And already as he was going, his servants met him and reported, saying, "Your child lives!"

51  And as he was now going down, his servants met him, saying, that his son lived.

51  Then, as he was going down, his servants met him. And they reported to him, saying that his son was alive.

4:52  Then he inquired from them the hour at which he got better. And they said to him, "Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him."

52  And he asked them, At what time was he healed? They said to him, Yesterday at the seventh hour, the fever left him.

4:53  Therefore the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, "Your son lives."And he himself believed, and his whole household.

4:54  This again is the second sign Jesus did, after He had come out of Judea into Galilee.

54  This next sign was the second that Jesus accomplished, after he had arrived in Galilee from Judea.

5:1  After these things there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

5:2  Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep [Gate] a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches.

2  Now at Jerusalem is the Pool of Evidence, which in Hebrew is known as the Place of Mercy; it has five porticos.

2  Now there was at Jerusalem a baptismal pool, which is called in Hebrew Bethesda, having five entrances.

5:3  In these [porches] were lying a great multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water.

3  And at these entrances a great many sick people were lying, the blind, the lame, and the crippled; and they were waiting for the water to be stirred up;

5:4  For an angel from time to[ ]time descended into the pool and stirred up the water; therefore the first [one] having gone in after the stirring up of the water, became well of whatever disease he was suffering.

4  [for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the waters stepped in was made whole, with whatsoever disease he was holden.]

5:5  Now there was a certain man there who had an ailment [for ]thirty-eight years.

5  And a certain man was there, who had been thirty and eight years in his infirmity.

5  A man was there who had been sick for thirty-eight years.

5:6  When Jesus saw this [man] lying there, and knew that he already had been in [that condition] a long time, He said to him, "Do you wish to become well?"

6  Then, when Jesus had seen him reclining, and when he realized that he had been afflicted for a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?”

5:7  The sick man answered Him, "Sir, I do not have a man, so that whenever the water is stirred up, he may put me into the pool; but while I am coming, another descends before me."

7  The invalid answered him: “Lord, I do not have any man to put me in the pool, when the water has been stirred. For as I am going, another descends ahead of me.”

7  The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.

5:8  Jesus said to him, "Arise, take up your bed and walk."

5:9  And immediately the man became well, and took up his bed, and began to walk. And that day was the Sabbath.

9  And straightway the man was made whole, and took up his bed and walked. Now it was the sabbath on that day.

5:10  Therefore the Jews said to the man who was healed, "It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed."

10  So the Jews said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath, and it is not lawful for thee to take up thy bed.

10  Therefore, the Jews said to the one who had been healed: “It is the Sabbath. It is not lawful for you to take up your stretcher.”

5:11  He answered them, "He that made me whole, He said to me, 'Take up your bed and walk.' "

11  But he answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.

5:12  Then they asked him, "Who is the Man who said to you, 'Take up your bed and walk'?"

12  They asked him, Who is the man that said unto thee, Take up [thy bed], and walk?

12  Therefore, they questioned him, “Who is that man, who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk?’ ”

5:13  But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had turned aside, while a crowd was in that place.

13  And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.

5:14  After these things Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, "See, you have become well. Sin no more, lest something worse may happen to you."

14  Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing befall thee.

14  After a while, Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, Behold, you are healed; do not sin again, for something worse might happen to you than the first.

5:15  The man went away and reported to the Jews that Jesus was the [One ]who had made him well.

15  And the man went away and told the Jews, that it was Jesus who had healed him.

15  The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.

5:16  And on account of this the Jews began to persecute Jesus, and were seeking to kill Him, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.

16  And for this cause the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath.

5:17  But Jesus answered them, "My Father has been working until now, and I am working."

17  But Jesus said to them, My Father works even until now, so I also work.

5:18  Because of this the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but also He called God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.

18  Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

5:19  Then Jesus answered and said to them, "Most assuredly I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father doing; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.

5:20  For the Father loves the Son, and shows to Him all things which He Himself does; and greater works than these He will show Him, so that you may marvel.

5:21  For as the Father raises up the dead and gives life, thus also the Son gives life to whom He wills.

5:22  For the Father judges no one, but He has given all judgment to the Son,

22  For neither doth the Father judge any man, but he hath given all judgment unto the Son;

5:23  so that all may honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

23  that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He that honoreth not the Son honoreth not the Father that sent him.

5:24  "Most assuredly I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.

24  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth him that sent me, hath eternal life, and cometh not into judgment, but hath passed out of death into life.

5:25  Most assuredly I say to you, that an hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those having heard shall live.

25  Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God; and they that hear shall live.

5:26  For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself,

26  For as the Father has life in himself, even so he has given to the Son also to have life in himself.

5:27  and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is [the] Son of Man.

27  And he has given him the authority to accomplish judgment. For he is the Son of man.

5:28  Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming in which all those in the tombs will hear His voice

28  Marvel not at this: for the hour cometh, in which all that are in the tombs shall hear his voice,

28  Do not be amazed at this. For the hour is coming in which all who are in the grave shall hear the voice of the Son of God.

5:29  and shall come forth-those who have done good, to a resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to a resurrection of condemnation.

29  And those who have done good shall go forth to the resurrection of life. Yet truly, those who have done evil shall go to the resurrection of judgment.

29  And they will come out; those who have done good works to the resurrection of life; and those who have done evil works to the resurrection of judgment.

5:30  I can of My own self do nothing. Even as I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.

30  I am not able to do anything of myself. As I hear, so do I judge. And my judgment is just. For I do not seek my own will, but the will of him who sent me.

5:31  "If I testify of Myself, My testimony is not valid.

31  If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

5:32  There is another who testifies about Me, and I know that the testimony which He testifies concerning Me is true.

32  It is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

32  It is another one who testifies concerning me; and I know that the testimony which he testifies concerning me is true.

5:33  You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.

33  Ye have sent unto John, and he hath borne witness unto the truth.

33  You sent to John, and he offered testimony to the truth.

5:34  But I do not receive the testimony from man, but these things I say so that you may be saved.

34  But the witness which I receive is not from man: howbeit I say these things, that ye may be saved.

5:35  He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.

35  He was a burning and shining light. So you were willing, at the time, to exult in his light.

35  He was a lamp which burns and gives light; and you were willing to delight in his light for a while.

5:36  But I have a testimony greater than John's; for the works which the Father gave to Me, that I should complete them, these very works which I do, testify of Me, that the Father has sent Me.

36  But the witness which I have is greater than [that of] John; for the works which the Father hath given me to accomplish, the very works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

36  But I hold a greater testimony than that of John. For the works which the Father has given to me, so that I may complete them, these works themselves that I do, offer testimony about me: that the Father has sent me.

5:37  And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified about Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form.

37  And the Father who has sent me has himself offered testimony about me. And you have never heard his voice, nor have you beheld his appearance.

5:38  But you do not have His word abiding in you, because [Him ]whom He sent, Him you do not believe.

38  And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he sent, him ye believe not.

5:39  You search the Scriptures, because you think [that] in them you have eternal life; and these are they which testify about Me.

39  Study the Scriptures. For you think that in them you have eternal life. And yet they also offer testimony about me.

39  Examine the scriptures, in which you trust that you have eternal life; and even they testify concerning me.

5:40  But you are unwilling to come to Me, so that you may have life.

40  and ye will not come to me, that ye may have life.

40  Yet you will not come to me, that you might have life everlasting.

5:41  I do not receive glory from men.

5:42  But I have known you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves.

42  But I know you well, that the love of God is not in you.

5:43  I have come in My Father's name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive.

43  I am come in my Father`s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

5:44  How can you believe, who receive glory from one another, and do not seek the glory which is from the only God?

44  How are you able to believe, you who accept glory from one another and yet do not seek the glory that is from God alone?

44  How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

5:45  Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you-Moses, in whom you have hoped.

45  Think not that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, [even] Moses, on whom ye have set your hope.

45  Why, do you think that I will accuse you before the Father; there is one who will accuse you, even Moses, in whom you trust.

5:46  For if you believed Moses, you would have believed Me; for he wrote about Me.

5:47  But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?"

47  If you do not believe his writings, how then can you believe my words?

6:1  After these things Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee, that is, of Tiberias.

6:2  And a large crowd was following Him, because they were seeing His signs which He was doing upon those who were sick.

2  And a great multitude followed him, because they beheld the signs which he did on them that were sick.

6:3  And Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat down with His disciples.

3  Therefore, Jesus went onto a mountain, and he sat down there with his disciples.

6:4  Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near.

4  And the feast of the passover of the Jews was at hand.

6:5  Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward Him, He said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread, that these [people ]may eat?"

6:6  But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He was about to do.

6  And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.

6  He said this merely to test him; for he knew what he would do.

6:7  Philip answered Him, "Two hundred denarii [worth of] bread is not enough for them, that each of them might receive a little."

7  Philip said to him, Two hundred pennies worth of bread would not be sufficient for them, even if each one should take a little.

6:8  One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to Him,

6:9  There is a little boy here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they for so many?"

6:10  Then Jesus said, "Make the people to recline."Now there was much grass in that place. Therefore the men reclined, in number about five thousand.

10  Jesus said, Make the people sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.

10  Then Jesus said, “Have the men sit down to eat.” Now, there was much grass in that place. And so the men, in number about five thousand, sat down to eat.

6:11  And Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks He distributed them to the disciples, and the disciples to those who were reclining; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wished.

11  Jesus therefore took the loaves; and having given thanks, he distributed to them that were set down; likewise also of the fishes as much as they would.

11  Therefore, Jesus took the bread, and when he had given thanks, he distributed it to those who were sitting down to eat; similarly also, from the fish, as much as they wanted.

6:12  But when they were filled, He said to His disciples, "Gather up the leftover fragments, so that nothing may be lost."

12  Then, when they were filled, he said to his disciples, “Gather the fragments that are left over, lest they be lost.”

12  When they were filled, he said to his disciples, Gather up the broken pieces which are left over, so that nothing is lost.

6:13  Therefore they gathered [them] up, and they filled twelve baskets of fragments from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten.

6:14  Then those men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, "This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world."

6:15  Therefore Jesus, knowing that they were about to come and seize Him, that they might make Him king, withdrew to the mountain by Himself.

15  And so, when he realized that they were going to come and take him away and make him king, Jesus fled back to the mountain, by himself alone.

15  But Jesus knew that they were ready to come and seize him to make him a king, so he departed to the mountain alone.

6:16  Now when evening came, His disciples went down to the sea,

16  Then, when evening arrived, his disciples descended to the sea.

6:17  and having entered into the boat, they were going across the sea to Capernaum. And darkness had already come, and Jesus had not come to them.

17  and they entered into a boat, and were going over the sea unto Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them.

17  And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them.

6:18  And the sea was agitated by a great blowing wind.

18  Then the sea was stirred up by a great wind that was blowing.

18  And the sea became rough, because a strong wind was blowing.

6:19  Therefore having rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the boat; and they were frightened.

19  And so, when they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they saw Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing near to the boat, and they were afraid.

6:20  But He said to them, "[It is] I AM; do not fear."

6:21  Then they were willing to receive Him into the boat, and immediately the boat arrived at the land to which they were going.

21  So they wanted to receive him into the boat; but soon the boat reached the land to which they were going.

6:22  On the next day, when the crowd which had remained on the other side of the sea, having seen that there was no other boat there, except that one in which His disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered into the boat with His disciples, but His disciples had gone away alone-

22  On the morrow the multitude that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, save one, and that Jesus entered not with his disciples into the boat, but [that] his disciples went away alone

22  The next day, the multitude which stood waiting at the seaport saw no other boat there, except the boat in which the disciples had entered, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples.

6:23  however, other boats came from Tiberias, near the place where they ate bread after YHWH had given thanks-

23  Yet truly, other boats came over from Tiberias, next to the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord gave thanks.

23  But other boats had come from Tiberias, near the place where they had eaten bread, when Jesus blessed it.

6:24  when the crowd therefore saw that Jesus was not there, nor His disciples, they got into boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

24  Therefore, when the crowd had seen that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they climbed into the small boats, and they went to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

6:25  And having found Him on the other side of the sea, they said to Him, "Rabbi, when did You come here?"

25  And when they found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither?

6:26  Jesus answered them and said, "Most assuredly I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate from the loaves and were satisfied.

6:27  Work not for the food which perishes, but for the food which abides unto everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give to you; for [upon] Him God the Father has set [His] seal."

27  Do not work for food that perishes, but for that which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you. For God the Father has sealed him.”

27  Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

6:28  Then they said to Him, "What should we do, that we may work the works of God?"

28  Therefore, they said to him, “What should we do, so that we may labor in the works of God?”

28  They said to him, What shall we do to work the works of God?

6:29  Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent."

6:30  Therefore they said to Him, "What sign will You do then, so that we may see it and believe You? What work do You perform?

30  They said therefore unto him, What then doest thou for a sign, that we may see, and believe thee? what workest thou?

30  They said to him, What miracle do you perform that we may see and believe in you? What have you performed?

6:31  Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.' "

6:32  Then Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly I say to you, Moses has not given you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven.

32  Jesus therefore said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, It was not Moses that gave you the bread out of heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread out of heaven.

6:33  For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."

6:34  Then they said to Him, "Lord, give us this bread always."

34  They said therefore unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.

34  And so they said to him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”

6:35  And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.

35  Jesus said unto them. I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall not hunger, and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.

6:36  But I told you that you have both seen Me and you do not believe.

36  But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not.

6:37  All that the Father gives Me shall come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.

37  All that which the Father giveth me shall come unto me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

37  Everyone whom my Father has given me shall come to me; and he who comes to me, I will not cast him out.

6:38  For I have come down from heaven, not that I might do My will, but the will of Him who sent Me.

38  For I descended from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.

6:39  And this is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me, I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.

39  Yet this is the will of the Father who sent me: that I should lose nothing out of all that he has given to me, but that I should raise them up on the last day.

6:40  And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day."

40  For this is the will of my Father, that every one that beholdeth the Son, and believeth on him, should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

40  So then, this is the will of my Father who sent me: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

6:41  Therefore the Jews were murmuring about Him, because He said, "I am the bread which came down from heaven."

41  Now the Jews murmured against him, for he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven.

6:42  And they were saying, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then does this [Man] say, 'I have come down from heaven'?"

42  And they said: “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? Then how can he say: ‘For I descended from heaven?’ ”

6:43  Jesus therefore answered and said to them, "Do not murmur among yourselves.

43  And so Jesus responded and said to them: “Do not choose to murmur among yourselves.

43  Jesus answered and said to them, Do not murmur one with another.

6:44  No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me should draw him; and I will raise him up at the last day.

44  No man can come to me, except the Father that sent me draw him: and I will raise him up in the last day.

44  No one is able to come to me, unless the Father, who has sent me, has drawn him. And I will raise him up on the last day.

6:45  It is written in the prophets, 'And they shall all be taught of God.' Therefore everyone who hears from the Father, and has learned, comes to Me.

45  It has been written in the Prophets: ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has listened and learned from the Father comes to me.

45  For it is written in the prophet, They shall all be taught by God. Everyone therefore who hears from the Father and learns from him, will come to me.

6:46  Not that anyone has seen the Father, except He who is from God; He has seen the Father.

46  No man can see the Father, except he who is from God, he can see the Father.

6:47  Most assuredly I say to you, he who believes in Me has eternal life.

47  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth hath eternal life.

47  Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me has eternal life.

6:48  I am the bread of life.

6:49  Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and died.

6:50  This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die.

6:51  I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world."

6:52  Therefore the Jews were contending with one another, saying, "How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?"

52  Therefore, the Jews debated among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

52  The Jews argued one with another, saying, How can this man give us his body to eat?

6:53  Then Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves.

6:54  Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up in the last day.

54  He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath eternal life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

6:55  For My flesh truly is food, and My blood truly is drink.

6:56  He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.

56  He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood abideth in me, and I in him.

6:57  Just as the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me.

57  As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father; so he that eateth me, he also shall live because of me.

6:58  This is the bread which came down from heaven, not as your fathers ate the manna, and died. He that eats this bread shall live forever."

6:59  These things He said in the synagogue as He taught in Capernaum.

6:60  Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, "This is a hard saying; who can hear it?"

60  Therefore, many of his disciples, upon hearing this, said: “This saying is difficult,” and, “Who is able to listen to it?”

60  Many of his disciples who heard it said, This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?

6:61  And Jesus, knowing in Himself that His disciples were murmuring about this, He said to them, "Does this offend you?

61  But Jesus knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at this, said unto them, Doth this cause you to stumble?

61  Jesus knew in himself that his disciples were murmuring about this; so he said to them, Does this cause you to stumble?

6:62  What then if you should see the Son of Man ascending where He was before?

6:63  It is the Spirit who makes alive; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.

6:64  But there are some of you who do not believe."For Jesus knew from the beginning who were the ones who did not believe, and who was the one who would betray Him.

64  But there are some among you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who were unbelieving and which one would betray him.

6:65  And He said, "Because of this I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father."

65  And he said, For this cause have I said unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it be given unto him of the Father.

65  And so he said, “For this reason, I said to you that no one is able to come to me, unless it has been given to him by my Father.”

6:66  From this [time] many of His disciples turned back and no longer would walk with Him.

66  After this, many of his disciples went back, and they no longer walked with him.

66  Just because of this saying, a great many of his disciples turned away, and did not walk with him.

6:67  Then Jesus said to the twelve, "Do you also want to go away?"

67  Jesus said therefore unto the twelve, Would ye also go away?

67  So Jesus said to his twelve, Why, do you also want to go away?

6:68  But Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.

68  Then Simon Peter answered him: “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life.

6:69  Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

69  And we have believed and know that thou art the Holy One of God.

69  And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

6:70  He answered them, "Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?"

70  Jesus answered them: “Have I not chosen you twelve? And yet one among you is a devil.”

70  Jesus said to them, Did not I choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is Satan?

6:71  Now He was speaking [about] Judas Iscariot, [the son] of Simon, for he was intending to betray Him, though he was one of the twelve.

71  He said it concerning Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot; for he was the one of the twelve who was going to betray him.

71  He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.

7:1  And after these things Jesus was walking in Galilee; for He did not wish to walk in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill Him.

1  AFTER these things Jesus travelled in Galilee; for he did not wish to travel in Judaea, because the Jews wanted to kill him.

7:2  Now the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near.

2  Now the feast of the Jews, the feast of tabernacles, was at hand.

7:3  His brothers therefore said to Him, "Depart from here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see the works that You do.

3  And his brothers said to him: “Move away from here and go into Judea, so that your disciples there may also see your works that you do.

7:4  For no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be known publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world."

4  Of course, no one does anything in secret, but he himself seeks to be in the public view. Since you do these things, manifest yourself to the world.”

4  For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.

7:5  For not even His brothers believed in Him.

7:6  Then Jesus said to them, "My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready.

6  Therefore, Jesus said to them: “My time has not yet come; but your time is always at hand.

7:7  The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify about it, that its works are evil.

7:8  You go up to this feast. I am not yet going up to this feast, because My time has not yet been fulfilled."

8  Go ye up unto the feast: I go not up unto this feast; because my time is not yet fulfilled.

7:9  When He had said these things to them, He remained in Galilee.

9  And having said these things unto them, he abode [still] in Galilee.

9  He said these things, and remained in Galilee.

7:10  But when His brothers had gone up, then also He Himself went up to the feast, not openly, but as [it were] in secret.

10  But after his brothers went up, then he also went up to the feast day, not openly, but as if in secret.

7:11  Then the Jews were seeking Him at the feast, and said, "Where is He?"

11  The Jews therefore sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?

11  Therefore, the Jews were seeking him on the feast day, and they were saying, “Where is he?”

7:12  And there was much murmuring among the crowds concerning Him. Some on the one hand were saying, "He is a good [Man]"; [while ]others were saying, "No, on the contrary, He deceives the people."

12  And there was much murmuring among the multitudes concerning him: some said, He is a good man; others said, Not so, but he leadeth the multitude astray.

12  And there was much murmuring in the crowd concerning him. For certain ones were saying, “He is good.” But others were saying, “No, for he seduces the crowds.”

7:13  However, no one spoke openly of Him for fear of the Jews.

13  Yet no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.

13  But no man spoke openly about him, because of the fear of the Jews.

7:14  But now about the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began to teach.

14  But when it was now the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.

14  Then, about the middle of the feast, Jesus ascended into the temple, and he was teaching.

7:15  And the Jews were marveling, saying, "How is this Man learned, since He has not been educated?"

15  The Jews therefore marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?

15  And the Jews wondered, saying: “How does this one know letters, though he has not been taught?”

7:16  Therefore Jesus answered them and said, "My doctrine is not Mine, but His who sent Me.

16  Jesus responded to them and said: “My doctrine is not of me, but of him who sent me.

16  Jesus answered and said, My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.

7:17  If anyone desires to do His will, he will know about the doctrine, whether it is from God, or whether I am speaking on My own authority.

17  If any man willeth to do his will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it is of God, or [whether] I speak from myself.

17  He who wills to do his will, he will understand if my teaching is from God, or if I am just speaking of my own accord.

7:18  He who speaks from himself is seeking his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him.

18  He that speaketh from himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh the glory of him that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

7:19  Has not Moses given you the law, yet none of you keeps the law? Why are you seeking to kill Me?"

19  Did not Moses give you the law? And yet not one among you keeps the law!

7:20  The crowd answered and said, "You have a demon. Who is seeking to kill You?"

20  The multitude answered, Thou hast a demon: who seeketh to kill thee?

20  Why are you seeking to kill me?” The crowd responded and said: “You must have a demon. Who is seeking to kill you?”

7:21  Jesus answered and said to them, "I did one work, and [you] all marvel.

7:22  Because of this Moses has given you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on [the] Sabbath.

7:23  If a man receives circumcision on [the] Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made a man completely well on [the] Sabbath?

23  So if a man is circumcised on the sabbath day, that the law of Moses may not be broken; yet you murmur at me, because I healed a whole man on the sabbath day?

7:24  Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment."

24  Judge not according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

24  Do not judge by partiality, but judge a just judgment.

7:25  Therefore some of people of Jerusalem were saying, "Is this not He whom they are seeking to kill?

25  Some therefore of them of Jerusalem said, Is not this he whom they seek to kill?

25  Then some of the men of Jerusalem were saying, Is not this the man whom they want to kill?

7:26  And look! He is speaking publicly, and they say nothing to Him. Can it be that the rulers know indeed that this is truly the Christ?

26  And yet he speaks openly, but they say nothing to him. Perhaps our elders have found out that he is the Christ?

7:27  However, we know where this Man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from."

27  Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when the Christ cometh, no one knoweth whence he is.

27  But we know him and where he is from. And when the Christ has arrived, no one will know where he is from.”

7:28  Therefore Jesus cried out, as He was teaching in the temple, saying, "You both know Me, and you know where I am from; and I have not come on my own, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know.

28  Jesus therefore cried in the temple, teaching and saying, Ye both know me, and know whence I am; and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.

28  Therefore, Jesus cried out in the temple, teaching and saying: “You know me, and you also know where I am from. And I have not arrived of myself, but he who sent me is true, and him you do not know.

7:29  I know Him, for I am from Him, and He sent Me."

29  But I know him; because I am from him, and he sent me.

7:30  Therefore they were seeking to arrest Him; but no one laid a hand on Him, because His hour had not yet come.

30  So they wanted to seize him; and no man laid hands on him, because his time had not yet come.

30  Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.

7:31  But many of the crowd believed in Him, and were saying, "When the Christ comes, will He do more signs than these which this [Man] did?"

7:32  The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about Him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent attendants so that they might arrest Him.

32  The Pharisees heard the people talking about him; so they and the high priests sent soldiers to arrest him.

7:33  Then Jesus said, "Yet a little while am I with you, and [then] I go to Him who sent Me.

33  Therefore, Jesus said to them: “For a brief time, I am still with you, and then I am going to him who sent me.

33  And Jesus said, I am with you just a short while, and I am going to him who sent me.

7:34  You will seek Me and you will not find [Me], and where I am you cannot come."

34  Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, ye cannot come.

7:35  Therefore the Jews said among themselves, "Where does this [man] intend to go that we will not find Him? Does He intend to go into the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks?

35  And so the Jews said among themselves: “Where is this place to which he will go, such that we will not find him? Will he go to those dispersed among the Gentiles and teach the Gentiles?

35  Then the Jews said among themselves, Where is he going, that we cannot find him? why, is he planning to go to the countries of the Gentiles, to teach the pagans?

7:36  What is this thing which He said, 'You will seek Me and you will not find [Me], and where I am you cannot come'?"

36  What does this word mean which he said, You will seek me and you will not find me; and where I am you cannot come?

36  What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?

7:37  Now on the last day, the great [day] of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.

7:38  He that believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his belly will flow rivers of living water."

38  whoever believes in me, just as Scripture says, ‘From his chest shall flow rivers of living water.’ ”

7:39  (But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him were about to receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet [given], because Jesus was not yet glorified.)

39  But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believed on him were to receive: for the Spirit was not yet [given]; because Jesus was not yet glorified.

39  Now he said this about the Spirit, which those who believe in him would soon be receiving. For the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.

7:40  Therefore many from the crowd, when they heard this saying, said, "Truly this is the Prophet."

40  [Some] of the multitude therefore, when they heard these words, said, This is of a truth the prophet.

40  Many of the people who heard his words were saying, This man truly is a prophet.

7:41  Others said, "This is the Christ."Others said, "But the Christ is not coming out of Galilee, [is He]?

41  Others were saying, “He is the Christ.” Yet certain ones were saying: “Does the Christ come from Galilee?

7:42  Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from the village of Bethlehem, where David was?"

42  Hath not the scripture said that the Christ cometh of the seed of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?

42  Does Scripture not say that the Christ comes from the offspring of David and from Bethlehem, the town where David was?”

7:43  Therefore a division occurred among the crowd because of Him.

43  So there arose a division in the multitude because of him.

7:44  Now some of them wished to arrest Him, but no one laid a hand on Him.

44  And there were some men among them, who wanted to seize him; but no man laid hands on him.

7:45  Then the attendants came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why did you not bring Him?"

45  Therefore, the attendants went to the high priests and the Pharisees. And they said to them, “Why have you not brought him?”

7:46  The attendants answered them, "No man ever spoke like this Man!"

46  The officers answered, Never man so spake.

46  The soldiers said to them, Never a man has spoken as this man speaks.

7:47  Then the Pharisees answered them, "Have you also been deceived?

47  The Pharisees therefore answered them, Are ye also led astray?

47  And so the Pharisees answered them: “Have you also been seduced?

7:48  Have any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in Him?

48  Why, have any of the leaders or of the Pharisees believed in him,

7:49  But this crowd which does not know the law is accursed."

49  But this multitude that knoweth not the law are accursed.

49  Except this cursed people, who do not know the law?

7:50  Nicodemus (he who came to Him by night, being one of them) said to them,

50  Nicodemus, the one who came to him by night and who was one of them, said to them,

7:51  Does our law judge a man before it hears from him first, and knows what he is doing?"

51  Doth our law judge a man, except it first hear from himself and know what he doeth?

51  “Does our law judge a man, unless it has first heard him and has known what he has done?”

7:52  They answered and said to him, "Are you also from Galilee? Search and see, because no prophet has arisen out of Galilee."

7:53  And everyone went to his own house.

8:1  But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

1  THEN Jesus went to the mount of Olives.

8:2  And early in the morning, He came again into the temple, and all the people came to Him; and having sat down, He began to teach them.

8:3  Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman who had been caught in adultery, and having stood her in [the] midst,

3  And the scribes and the Pharisees bring a woman taken in adultery; and having set her in the midst,

3  Now the scribes and Pharisees brought forward a woman caught in adultery, and they stood her in front of them.

8:4  they said to Him, "Teacher, we found this [woman ]committing adultery, in the very act.

4  they say unto him, Teacher, this woman hath been taken in adultery, in the very act.

4  And they said to him: “Teacher, this woman was just now caught in adultery.

8:5  Now Moses, in our law, commanded to cast stones at such. Therefore what do You say?"

5  And in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such a one. Therefore, what do you say?”

5  Now in the law of Moses it is commanded that women such as these should be stoned; but what do you say?

8:6  But this they said, testing Him, that they might have an accusation against Him. But Jesus, stooping down, began to write on the ground with His finger, not taking notice.

6  And this they said, trying him, that they might have [whereof] to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.

8:7  And while they were continuing questioning Him, rising up, He said unto them, "He who is without sin among you, let him [be the ]first to cast a stone at her."

7  But when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

8:8  And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.

8  And bending down again, he wrote on the earth.

8:9  And those who heard [it] began to go out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman being in the midst.

9  But upon hearing this, they went away, one by one, beginning with the eldest. And Jesus alone remained, with the woman standing in front of him.

8:10  And standing up and seeing no one but the woman, Jesus said to her, "Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Has no one condemned you?"

10  And Jesus lifted up himself, and said unto her, Woman, where are they? did no man condemn thee?

10  When Jesus straightened himself up, he said to the woman, Where are they?

8:11  She said, "No one, Lord."And Jesus said to her, "Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more."

11  And she said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said, Neither do I condemn thee: go thy way; from henceforth sin no more.

11  did no henceforth, do not sin again.

8:12  Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He that follows Me shall by no means walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

12  Again therefore Jesus spake unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.

12  Again Jesus spoke to them and said, I am the light of the world; he who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but he shall find for himself the light of life.

8:13  Therefore the Pharisees said to Him, "You testify about Yourself; Your testimony is not valid."

13  The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest witness of thyself; thy witness is not true.

8:14  Jesus answered and said to them, "Even if I should testify about Myself, My testimony is valid, because I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from and where I am going.

14  Jesus responded and said to them: “Even though I offer testimony about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going.

14  Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.

8:15  You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.

15  Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.

8:16  But even if I do judge, My judgment is true; because I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me.

16  Yea and if I judge, my judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.

16  And if I should judge, my judgment is true; because I am not doing it alone, but I and my Father who sent me.

8:17  It is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is valid.

17  Yea and in your law it is written, that the witness of two men is true.

17  And it is written in your law that the testimony of two men is true.

8:18  I am the [One] testifying about Myself, and the Father who sent Me testifies about Me."

18  I testify concerning myself, and my Father who sent me testifies concerning me.

8:19  Then they said to Him, "Where is Your Father?"Jesus answered, "You know neither Me nor My Father. If you knew Me, you would also know My Father."

19  They said therefore unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye know neither me, nor my Father: if ye knew me, ye would know my Father also.

8:20  These words Jesus spoke in the treasury, while teaching in the temple; and no one seized Him, for His time had not yet come.

8:21  Then Jesus said to them again, "I am going away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin. Where I go you cannot come."

21  He said therefore again unto them, I go away, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sin: whither I go, ye cannot come.

21  Therefore, Jesus again spoke to them: “I am going, and you shall seek me. And you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you are not able to go.”

8:22  So the Jews said, "[Surely ]He will not kill Himself, [will He,] since He says, 'Where I am going you cannot come'?"

22  The Jews therefore said, Will he kill himself, that he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come?

22  And so the Jews said, “Is he going to kill himself, for he said: ‘Where I am going, you are not able to go?’ ”

8:23  And He said to them, "You are from below; I am from above. You are from this world; I am not from this world.

8:24  Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins."

24  I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for except ye believe that I am [he], ye shall die in your sins.

24  I told you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins.

8:25  Then they said to Him, "Who are You?"And Jesus said to them, "Just what I have been saying to you [from] the beginning.

25  And so they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them: “The Beginning, who is also speaking to you.

25  The Jews said, Who are you? Jesus said to them, Even though I should begin to speak to you,

8:26  I have many things to say and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and the[ ]things which I heard from Him, these things I say to the world."

26  I have much to say about you and to judge. But he who sent me is true. And what I have heard from him, this I speak within the world.”

8:27  They did not know that He was speaking to them [about] the Father.

27  They perceived not that he spake to them of the Father.

27  And they did not realize that he was calling God his Father.

8:28  Therefore Jesus said to them, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I AM, and from Myself I do nothing; but just as My Father taught Me, these things I speak.

8:29  And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, because I always do the things pleasing to Him."

8:30  While He spoke these words, many believed in Him.

30  As he spake these things, many believed on him.

8:31  Then Jesus said to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you abide in My word, truly you are My disciples.

31  Jesus therefore said to those Jews that had believed him, If ye abide in my word, [then] are ye truly my disciples;

31  Therefore, Jesus said to those Jews who believed in him: “If you will abide in my word, you will truly be my disciples.

8:32  And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free."

8:33  They answered Him, "We are Abraham's descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How [can] you say, 'You will become free'?"

33  They answered unto him, We are Abraham`s seed, and have never yet been in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?

33  They answered him: “We are the offspring of Abraham, and we have never been a slave to anyone. How can you say, ‘You shall be set free?’ ”

8:34  Jesus answered them, "Most assuredly I say to you, that everyone that practices sin is a slave of sin.

34  Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Whoever commits sin is a servant of sin.

8:35  And a slave does not remain in the house forever, but a son remains forever.

35  And the bondservant abideth not in the house for ever: the son abideth for ever.

35  Now the slave does not abide in the house for eternity. Yet the Son does abide in eternity.

8:36  Therefore if the Son sets you free, you will be truly free.

36  If therefore the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

8:37  "I know that you are Abraham's descendants, but you seek to kill Me, because My word finds no place in you.

37  I know that ye are Abraham`s seed: yet ye seek to kill me, because my word hath not free course in you.

37  I know you are the seed of Abraham; but still you want to kill me, because you have no room in you for my word.

8:38  I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have seen with your father."

38  I speak the things which I have seen with [my] Father: and ye also do the things which ye heard from [your] father.

8:39  They answered and said to Him, "Abraham is our father."Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham.

39  They responded and said to him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them: “If you are the sons of Abraham, then do the works of Abraham.

8:40  But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has spoken to you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham did not do this.

40  But behold, now you want to kill me, even a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do.

40  But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.

8:41  You do the works of your father."Then they said to Him, "We were not born of fornication; we have one Father-God."

41  But you do the works of your father. They said to him, We are not born of fornication; we have one Father, God.

8:42  Therefore Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would have loved Me, for I came forth and have come from God; nor have I come from Myself, but He sent Me.

42  Then Jesus said to them: “If God were your father, certainly you would love me. For I proceeded and came from God. For I did not come from myself, but he sent me.

42  Jesus said to them, If God were your Father, you would love me, for I proceeded and came from God; I did not come of my own accord, but he sent me.

8:43  Why do you not understand what I say? Because you are unable to hear My word.

43  Why do ye not understand my speech? [Even] because ye cannot hear my word.

43  Why therefore do you not understand my word? Because you cannot obey my word?

8:44  You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you desire to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own [resources], for he is a liar, and the father of lies.

44  Ye are of [your] father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.

8:45  But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me.

45  And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.

8:46  Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me?

46  Which one of you can rebuke me because of sin? If I speak the truth, why do you not believe me?

8:47  He who is of God hears God's words; therefore you do not hear [them], because you are not of God."

47  He that is of God heareth the words of God: for this cause ye hear [them] not, because ye are not of God.

47  Whoever is of God, hears the words of God. For this reason, you do not hear them: because you are not of God.”

8:48  Then the Jews answered and said to Him, "Do we not say well that You are a Samaritan, and You have a demon?"

48  Therefore, the Jews responded and said to him, “Are we not correct in saying that you are a Samaritan, and that you have a demon?”

48  The Jews answered and said to him, Did we not say well, that you are a Samaritan, and that you are crazy?

8:49  Jesus answered, "I do not have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me.

49  Jesus responded: “I do not have a demon. But I honor my Father, and you have dishonored me.

49  Jesus said to them, I am not crazy; but I honor my Father, and you curse me.

8:50  And I do not seek My own glory; there is One who seeks it and who judges.

50  But I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.

50  I do not seek my glory; there is one who seeks and judges.

8:51  Most assuredly I say to you, if anyone keeps My word he shall by no means experience death."

51  Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my word, he shall never see death.

8:52  Then the Jews said to Him, "Now we know that You have a demon! Abraham and the prophets died, and You say, 'If anyone keeps My word he shall by no means taste death.'

52  The Jews said unto him, Now we know that thou hast a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my word, he shall never taste of death.

52  Therefore, the Jews said: “Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham is dead, and the Prophets; and yet you say, ‘If anyone will have kept my word, he shall not taste death for eternity.’

8:53  "Are You greater than our father Abraham, who died? Also the prophets died. Whom do You make Yourself [out to be]?"

53  Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died: whom makest thou thyself?

8:54  Jesus answered, "If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing. It is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say that He is our God.

54  Jesus said to them, If I honor myself, my honor is nothing; but it is my Father who honors me, the one of whom you say, He is our God.

8:55  And yet you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I would say that I do not know Him, I would be like you, a liar; but I do know Him, and I keep His word.

55  and ye have not known him: but I know him; and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be like unto you, a liar: but I know him, and keep his word.

8:56  Your father Abraham rejoiced that he should see My day, and he saw it and he was glad."

56  Abraham, your father, rejoiced that he might see my day; he saw it and was glad.”

8:57  Then the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?"

57  And so the Jews said to him, “You have not yet reached fifty years, and you have seen Abraham?”

57  Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?

8:58  Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM."

58  Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was born, I am.

8:59  Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, having gone through their midst, and so passed by.

59  They took up stones therefore to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.

9:1  And passing by, He saw a man blind from birth.

9:2  And His disciples asked Him, saying, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"

9:3  Jesus answered, "Neither this [man] nor his parents sinned, but so that the works of God should be manifest in him.

3  Jesus said to them, Neither did he sin nor his parents. But that the works of God might be seen in him,

9:4  I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.

4  We must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

9:5  While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."

9:6  Having said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay from the saliva; and He applied the clay on the eyes of the blind [man].

6  When he had said these things, he spat on the ground, and he made clay from the spittle, and he smeared the clay over his eyes.

6  When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,

9:7  And He said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam"(which is translated, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing.

9:8  Therefore the neighbors and those who previously saw him, that he was blind, were saying, "Is not this he who sat and begged?"

8  And so the bystanders and those who had seen him before, when he was a beggar, said, “Is this not the one who was sitting and begging?” Some said, “This is he.”

8  His neighbors and those who had seen him before begging, said, Is not this he who used to sit down and beg?

9:9  Some said, "This is he."Others said, "He looks like him."He kept saying, "I am [he]."

9  But others said, “Certainly not, but he is similar to him.” Yet truly, he himself said, “I am he.”

9:10  Therefore they said to him, "How were your eyes opened?"

10  They said therefore unto him, How then were thine eyes opened?

9:11  He answered and said, "A Man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, 'Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.' When I had gone and washed, I received [my ]sight."

9:12  Then they said to him, "Where is He?"He said, "I do not know."

12  And they said unto him, Where is he? He saith, I know not.

9:13  They brought him who was once blind to the Pharisees.

13  They bring to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.

13  So they brought to the Pharisees him who had been blind from his birth.

9:14  Now it was a Sabbath when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes.

14  And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.

9:15  Then again the Pharisees were asking him how he received [his] sight. And he said to them, "He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see."

15  Again therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he received his sight. And he said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and I see.

15  Again the Pharisees asked him, How did you receive your sight? He said to them, He placed clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.

9:16  Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, "This Man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath."Others said, "How can a sinful man do such signs?"And there was a division among them.

16  And so certain Pharisees said: “This man, who does not keep the Sabbath, is not from God.” But others said, “How could a sinful man accomplish these signs?” And there was a schism among them.

16  Then some of the Pharisees said, This man is not from God, because he does not observe the sabbath; others said, How can a man who is a sinner do these miracles? And there was a division among them.

9:17  They said to the blind [man] again, "What do you say about Him because He opened your eyes?"He said, "He is a prophet."

17  They say therefore unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, in that he opened thine eyes? And he said, He is a prophet.

17  Therefore, they spoke again to the blind man, “What do you say about him who opened your eyes?” Then he said, “He is a Prophet.”

9:18  But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he was blind and received [his] sight, until they called the parents of him who had received [his] sight.

18  The Jews therefore did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and had received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight,

18  Therefore, the Jews did not believe, about him, that he had been blind and had seen, until they called the parents of him who had seen.

9:19  And they asked them, saying, "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?"

19  And they questioned them, saying: “Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? Then how is it that he now sees?”

9:20  And his parents answered them and said, "We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;

20  His parents responded to them and said: “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind.

9:21  but how he now sees we do not know, or who opened his eyes we do not know. He is of age; ask him. He will speak for himself."

21  But how it is that he now sees, we do not know. And who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him. He is old enough. Let him speak for himself.”

21  But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.

9:22  These things[ ]his parents said because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone should confess that He was Christ, he would be excommunicated.

22  His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews. For the Jews had already conspired, so that if anyone were to confess him to be the Christ, he would be expelled from the synagogue.

22  These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.

9:23  On account of this his parents said, "He is of age; ask him."

23  Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.

23  It was for this reason that his parents said: “He is old enough. Ask him.”

9:24  Therefore they called a second time the man who was blind, and said to him, "Give glory to God! We know that this Man is a sinner."

24  So they called a second time the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give glory to God: we know that this man is a sinner.

24  Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.

9:25  He answered and said, "Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One [thing] I do know: that although I was blind, now I see."

25  He therefore answered, Whether he is a sinner, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.

25  And so he said to them: “If he is a sinner, I do not know it. One thing I do know, that although I was blind, now I see.”

9:26  Then they said to him again, "What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?"

26  They said therefore unto him, What did he to thee? How opened he thine eyes?

9:27  He answered them, "I told you already, and you did not listen. Why do you wish to hear [it] again? Do you also want to become His disciples?"

27  He said to them, I have already told you, and you did not listen; why do you want to hear it again? why, do you also want to become his disciples?

27  He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?

9:28  [Then] they reviled him and said, "You are His disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.

28  Therefore, they cursed him and said: “You be his disciple. But we are disciples of Moses.

9:29  We know that God has spoken to Moses; but [as for ]this [Man], we do not know where He is from."

9:30  The man answered and said to them, "Why, this is a remarkable thing, that you do not know where He is from; yet He opened my eyes!

9:31  Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is God-fearing and does His will, He hears him.

31  We know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and do his will, him he heareth.

9:32  Since eternity past it was unheard of that anyone opened the eyes of [one] having been born blind.

32  From ages it has never been heard that a man opened the eyes of one who was born blind.

9:33  If this [Man] were not from God, He could do nothing."

33  Unless this man were of God, he would not be able to do any such thing.”

9:34  They answered and said to him, "You were completely born in sins, and do you teach us?"And they cast him out.

9:35  Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and having found him, He said to him, "Do you believe in the Son of God?"

9:36  He answered and said, "And who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?"

36  He who was healed answered and said, Who is he, my Lord, so that I may believe in him?

9:37  And Jesus said to him, "You have both seen Him and it is He who is speaking with you."

37  Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and he it is that speaketh with thee.

9:38  Then he said, "Lord, I believe!"And he worshipped Him.

38  And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.

38  He said, I do believe, my Lord; and he fell down and worshipped him.

9:39  And Jesus said, "For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see might become blind."

39  Then Jesus said to him, I have come for the judgment of this world, so that those who cannot see may see, and those who see may become blind.

9:40  Then [some] of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things, and said to Him, "Are we blind also?"

40  And certain Pharisees, who were with him, heard this, and they said to him, “Are we also blind?”

9:41  Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, 'We see.' Therefore your sin remains.

10:1  "Most assuredly I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold through the door, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber.

1  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

1  TRULY, truly, I say to you, He who does not enter by the door into the sheepfold, but climbs up from another place, is a thief and a bandit.

10:2  But he who enters through the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

10:3  To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and he leads them out.

10:4  And whenever he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice.

4  When he hath put forth all his own, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.

10:5  But they will by no means follow a stranger, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers."

5  And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.

5  But they do not follow a stranger; instead they flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.”

10:6  This illustration Jesus spoke to them, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them.

6  This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.

6  Jesus spoke this proverb to them. But they did not understand what he was saying to them.

10:7  Then Jesus said to them again, "Most assuredly I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.

7  Jesus therefore said unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.

7  Therefore, Jesus spoke to them again: “Amen, amen, I say to you, that I am the door of the sheep.

10:8  All who came [before Me] are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them.

8  All others, as many as have come, are thieves and robbers, and the sheep did not listen to them.

10:9  I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and go out, and will find pasture.

10:10  The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

10  The thief cometh not, but that he may steal, and kill, and destroy: I came that they may have life, and may have [it] abundantly.

10  A thief does not come, except to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they might have life, and have it abundantly.

10:11  I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.

10:12  But a hired hand, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them.

10:13  But the hired hand flees because he is a hired hand, and is not concerned about the sheep.

13  [he fleeth] because he is a hireling, and careth not for the sheep.

10:14  I am the good shepherd; and I know My [own], and I am known by My own.

10:15  Just as the Father knows Me, I also know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.

15  even as the Father knoweth me, and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.

10:16  And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; those also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.

16  And I have other sheep that are not of this fold, and I must lead them. They shall hear my voice, and there shall be one sheepfold and one shepherd.

10:17  Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it [up ]again.

17  For this reason, the Father loves me: because I lay down my life, so that I may take it up again.

17  This is why my Father loves me, because I lay down my life, so that I may take it up again.

10:18  No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it [up ]again. This command I have received from My Father."

18  No one takes it away from me. Instead, I lay it down of my own accord. And I have the power to lay it down. And I have the power to take it up again. This is the commandment that I have received from my Father.”

18  No man takes it away from me, but I lay it down of my own will. Therefore I have the power to lay it down, and I have the power to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.

10:19  Therefore there was a division again among the Jews because of these words.

10:20  And many of them said, "He has a demon and is raving mad. Why do you listen to Him?"

20  Then many of them were saying: “He has a demon or he is insane. Why do you listen him?”

10:21  Others said, "These are not the words of [one] being demon-possessed. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?"

21  Others were saying: “These are not the words of someone who has a demon. How would a demon be able to open the eyes of the blind?”

21  Others said, These are not the words of a crazy man. Why, can a crazy man open the eyes of the blind?

10:22  Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter.

10:25  Jesus answered them, "I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father's name, these things testify about Me.

10:26  But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, just as I said to you.

26  But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep.

10:27  My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.

10:28  And I give to them eternal life, and they shall never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.

10:29  My Father, who has given [them] to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch [them] out of My Father's hand.

29  What my Father gave to me is greater than all, and no one is able to seize from the hand of my Father.

29  For my Father who gave them to me is greater than all; and no man can snatch anything from my FatherÆs hand.

10:30  I and the Father are one."

30  I and my Father are one in accord.

10:31  Therefore the Jews took up stones again to stone Him.

10:32  Jesus answered them, "Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?"

10:33  The Jews answered Him, saying, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God."

33  The Jews said to him, It is not because of the good works we stone you, but because you blaspheme; for while you are only a man, you make yourself God.

10:34  Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your law, 'I said, "You are gods"'?

34  Jesus responded to them: “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said: you are gods?’

10:35  If He called those gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken),

10:36  do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because I said, 'I am the Son of God'?

36  why do you say, about him whom the Father has sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You have blasphemed,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God?’

10:37  If I am not doing the works of My Father, do not believe Me;

10:38  but if I am doing [them], even if you do not believe Me, believe the works, so that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him."

38  But if I do them, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.

10:39  Therefore they were seeking again to seize Him, but He escaped from their hand.

39  They sought again to take him: and he went forth out of their hand.

39  And they wanted again to seize him; but he escaped from their hands.

10:40  And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was first baptizing, and He stayed there.

10:41  And many came to Him and said, "John indeed performed no sign, but everything which John said about this [Man] was true."

41  And many went out to him. And they were saying: “Indeed, John accomplished no signs.

10:42  And many believed in Him there.

42  But all things whatsoever that John said about this man were true.” And many believed in him.

11:1  Now there was a certain man who was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

11:2  Now it was that Mary who had anointed YHWH with myrrh, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.

2  This is the Mary who anointed the feet of Jesus with perfume and wiped them with her hair. Lazarus who was sick, was her brother.

11:3  Therefore the sisters sent to Him, saying, "Lord, behold, [he] whom You love is sick."

3  His two sisters therefore sent to Jesus, saying, Our Lord, behold, the one whom you love is sick.

11:4  And when Jesus heard, He said, "This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it."

11:5  Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

11:6  Therefore when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed in the place where He was [for ]two days.

6  When he heard he was sick, he remained two days in the place where he was.

11:7  Then after this He said to the disciples, "Let us go into Judea again."

7  Then, after these things, he said to his disciples, “Let us go into Judea again.”

7  After that he said to his disciples, Come, let us go again to Judaea.

11:8  The disciples said to Him, "Rabbi, [just] now the Jews were seeking to stone You, and are You going there again?"

8  His disciples said to him, Teacher, not long ago the Jews wanted to stone you, and yet are you going there again?

8  His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?

11:9  Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

11:10  But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him."

10  But if a man travels at night time, he will stumble, because there is no light in it.

11:11  These things He said, and after this He said to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awaken him."

11  Jesus said these things; and after that he said to them, Our friend Lazarus is asleep; but I am going to awake him.

11  These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

11:12  Then His disciples said, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep he will get well."

12  The disciples therefore said unto him, Lord, if he is fallen asleep, he will recover.

12  And so his disciples said, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he shall be healthy.”

11:13  However, Jesus spoke about his death, but they thought that He was speaking about resting in sleep.

13  But Jesus had spoken about his death. Yet they thought that he spoke about the repose of sleep.

11:14  Then Jesus said to them plainly, "Lazarus is dead.

14  Therefore, Jesus then said to them plainly, “Lazarus has died.

11:15  And I rejoice for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless let us go to him."

15  And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

15  And I am glad I was not there, for your sakes, so that you may believe; but let us walk there.

11:16  Then Thomas, who is called the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "Let us also go, so that we may die with Him."

16  Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said unto his fellow-disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him.

11:17  Therefore when He had come, Jesus found that he had already been in the tomb four days.

17  Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

11:18  Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles away.

18  (Now Bethania was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia.)

11:19  And many of the Jews had come to the [women] around Martha and Mary, so that they might console them concerning their brother.

19  And many Jews kept coming to Martha and Mary, to comfort their hearts concerning their brother.

11:20  Then Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, met Him, but Mary was sitting in the house.

11:21  Then Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.

21  Martha therefore said unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

11:22  But even now I know that whatever You may ask of God, God will give You."

22  And even now I know that, whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee.

22  But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

11:23  Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."

11:24  Martha said to Him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day."

11:25  Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He that believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.

11:26  And everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?"

26  and whosoever liveth and believeth on me shall never die. Believest thou this?

11:27  She said to Him, "Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world."

27  She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, [even] he that cometh into the world.

11:28  And when she had said these things, she went out and secretly called Mary her sister, saying, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you."

11:29  As soon as she heard [that], she arose quickly and came to Him.

29  And she, when she heard it, arose quickly, and went unto him.

29  When Mary heard it, she rose up quickly and came to him.

11:30  Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met Him.

30  For Jesus had not yet arrived in the town. But he was still at that place where Martha had met him.

11:31  Then the Jews who were with her in the house and consoling her, when they saw that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, "She is going to the tomb, so that she may weep there."

31  The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there.

11:32  Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, seeing Him, she fell down at His feet, saying to Him, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died."

32  Mary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, and saw him, fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

32  Therefore, when Mary had arrived to where Jesus was, seeing him, she fell down at his feet, and she said to him. “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

11:33  Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled.

33  When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping, who had come with her, he was moved in his spirit, and was greatly disturbed.

11:34  And He said, "Where have you laid him?"They said to Him, "Lord, come and see."

11:35  Jesus wept.

35  And Jesus was in tears.

11:36  Therefore the Jews were saying, "Look how He loved him!"

36  The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him!

36  Therefore, the Jews said, “See how much he loved him!”

11:37  But some of them said, "Could not this Man, who opened the eyes of the blind, have done [something] to keep this man from dying?"

37  Some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of that blind man, have also kept this man from dying?

37  And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?

11:38  Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it.

38  As Jesus was disturbed in himself because of them, he came to the tomb. That tomb was a cave, and a stone was placed at the entrance.

11:39  Jesus said, "Take away the stone."Martha, the sister of the [one] having died, said to Him, "Lord, already there is a stench, for he has been dead four days."

39  Jesus saith, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time the body decayeth; for he hath been [dead] four days.

11:40  Jesus said to her, "Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?"

40  Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou believedst, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

11:41  Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, "Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.

41  So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou heardest me.

41  Therefore, they took away the stone. Then, lifting up his eyes, Jesus said: “Father, I give thanks to you because you have heard me.

11:42  And I knew that You always hear Me, but because of the people standing around I said [this], so that they may believe that You sent Me."

42  And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the multitude that standeth around I said it, that they may believe that thou didst send me.

11:43  And having said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth!"

43  When he had said these things, he cried in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.”

43  And when he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come outside.

11:44  And the [one] having died came out, bound hands and feet with grave clothes, and his face was wrapped in a handkerchief. Jesus said to them, "Loose him, and let [him] go."

44  He that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave-clothes; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

44  And immediately, he who had been dead went forth, bound at the feet and hands with winding bands. And his face was bound with a separate cloth. Jesus said to them, “Release him and let him go.”

11:45  Therefore many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and seeing the things which Jesus had done, believed in Him.

45  Many therefore of the Jews, who came to Mary and beheld that which he did, believed on him.

11:46  But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.

11:47  Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, "What are we doing? For this Man works many signs.

47  So the high priests and the Pharisees gathered together and said, What shall we do? for this man does many miracles?

11:48  If we leave Him alone in this way, all will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and will take away both our place and nation."

48  If we allow him to continue like this, all men will believe in him; and the Romans will come and take over both our country and our people.

48  If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

11:49  But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, "You don't know anything,

49  Then one of them, named Caiaphas, since he was the high priest that year, said to them: “You do not understand anything.

49  And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

11:50  nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish."

11:51  Now this he did not say on his own, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation,

51  And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

11:52  and not for that nation only, but also that He would gather together in one the children of God who were scattered abroad.

11:53  Therefore from that day [on] they took counsel together, that they might kill Him.

53  So from that day forth they took counsel that they might put him to death.

53  And from that very day, they decided to kill him.

11:54  Therefore Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews, but He went away from there into the country near the desert, to a city called Ephraim, and there He stayed with His disciples.

54  Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed thence into the country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim; and there he tarried with the disciples.

54  And so, Jesus no longer walked in public with the Jews. But he went into a region near the desert, to a city which is called Ephraim. And he lodged there with his disciples.

11:55  And the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went from the country up to Jerusalem before the Passover, so that they might purify themselves.

55  Now the Jewish passover was at hand; and many went up from the towns to Jerusalem, before the feast, to purify themselves.

11:56  Then they were seeking Jesus, and they were speaking with one another, standing in the temple, "What do you think-that He will definitely not come to the feast?"

56  They sought therefore for Jesus, and spake one with another, as they stood in the temple, What think ye? That he will not come to the feast?

11:57  Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if anyone knew where He was, he should report [it], so that they might seize Him.

57  And the high priests and Pharisees had given an order, so that if anyone would know where he may be, he should reveal it, so that they might apprehend him.

57  But the high priests and the Pharisees had already commanded, that if any man should know where he is, to let them know, so that they might seize him.

12:1  Then Jesus, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had died, whom He raised from the dead.

12:3  Then Mary, having taken a pound of very costly pure nard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

3  Mary therefore took a pound of ointment of pure nard, very precious, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odor of the ointment.

3  And then Mary took twelve ounces of pure spikenard ointment, very precious, and she anointed the feet of Jesus, and she wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment.

12:4  Then one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, [son ]of Simon, who was about to betray Him, said,

4  But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples, that should betray him, saith,

12:5  Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?"
